Immediate Supervisor : Building Principal or Designee

Summary (Job Goal) : Assist school nurse in providing health care program for students and staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities : (Other duties may be assigned.)

  • Assess student health / illness; provide first aid and emergency health care.
  • Dispense medications as prescribed and according to District policy; document all meds coming in and going out of the office.
  • Use standard universal health precautions.
  • Check records to know which students need medical intervention. Ensure staff is aware of health concerns for specific students or any changes in medical history or concerns, as needed. Assist in moving records to appropriate facility with students when they transfer.
  • Check immunization records on current and incoming students as required, ensure information is up to date and accurate to meet state auditing requirements.
  • Communicate with nurse, faculty and parents appropriately, as needed.
  • Distribute and keep current Health Plan information with affected student's parents.
  • Maintain and update emergency information cards for students and staff.
  • Maintain health log tracking student activity.
  • Assist nurse with supply orders, maintain supply of needed inventory.
  • Keep classrooms stocked with necessary supplies.
  • Assist in coordination of vision and hearing screenings.
  • Field phone calls pertaining to student health problems. Relay messages as needed.
  • Maintain information and documentation regarding sports physicals, if needed.
  • Maintain confidential records.
  • Confidentiality of all information is mandatory.
  • Facilitate student absences due to health problems.
  • Enter health office data in computer.
  • Maintain a clean, sanitary, orderly and safe environment.
  • Regular and reliable attendance.
  • Stay current in certifications and training needed to perform duties.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities :

Supervise students within the building as directed.

Minimum Education or Experience :

High school diploma required.

Training in CPR, first aid and administration of medication preferred.

Licensure or Certification :

American Heart or Red Cross Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification for adult, child and infants including Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and barrier devices (preferred).

American Heart or Red Cross First Aid certification (preferred).

Annual Mandatory Reporting for Child / Dependent Adult Abuse.

Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Ability to assess medical situations and emergencies in absence of nurse.

Communicate effectively and professionally with the Special Education Director, On-Site Supervisors and / or Special Education Teacher, Special Education employees, parents, children, other school employees and community members.

Possess a genuine interest in helping students.

Possess patience as to not get easily discouraged.

Ability to address inappropriate student behavior in a proactive way.
