Job Summary

A Certified Welder Educator Supervisor is a welding professional who is certified by the American Welding Society (AWS) or adheres to the standards they set. The individual must possess a high level of skill, knowledge, and adherence to quality and safety protocols.

Curriculum and Instruction :

  • Develop and Deliver Training : Create and implement comprehensive welding curricula that align with industry standards and educational objectives, including both classroom theory and hands-on practical training.
  • Teach and Demonstrate : Provide engaging lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on training in various welding techniques, such as MIG, TIG, and Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW).
  • Align with Standards : Ensure that the curriculum and instruction meet the standards of the American Welding Society (AWS) and other relevant industry codes (e.g., ASME, API).
  • Stay Current : Keep up to date with the latest welding technologies, industry trends, and safety protocols to ensure the curriculum remains relevant.
  • Inspect welds for quality, accuracy, and adherence to blueprints, specifications, and industry codes (e.g., AWS, ASME).
  • Conduct visual and, in some cases, non-destructive testing (NDT) to ensure the integrity of welds.

Student Evaluation and Mentorship :

  • Assess Performance : Evaluate student performance through practical evaluations, written tests, and assignments.
  • Provide Feedback : Offer constructive feedback to students to help them improve their skills and knowledge.
  • Mentorship : Mentor and guide students, helping them develop not only their technical skills but also professional habits like time management, communication, and teamwork.
  • Prepare for Certification : Prepare students for AWS certification exams and overall job readiness.
  • Safety and Workshop Management :

  • Enforce Safety Protocols : Promote and enforce strict safety protocols and ensure compliance with health and safety regulations (e.g., OSHA) in the welding lab.
  • Maintain Equipment : Prepare and maintain welding equipment and materials for instructional use, ensuring the workshop is organized and safe.
  • Identify and report any hazards or incidents immediately.
  • Ensure the welding area is well ventilated and that all personnel are using proper personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Stay current with industry safety standards and training.
  • Quality Control and Compliance :

  • Inspect welds for quality, accuracy, and adherence to blueprints, specifications, and industry codes (e.g., AWS, ASME).
  • Conduct visual and, in some cases, non-destructive testing (NDT) to ensure the integrity of welds.
  • Develop and maintain welding procedure specifications (WPSs).
  • Administrative and Professional Duties :

  • Record Keeping : Maintain detailed records of student progress, attendance, and other relevant data.
  • Collaboration : Collaborate with lead instructors, industry partners, and other departments to enhance program offerings and ensure the curriculum meets market demands.
  • Recruitment and Retention : Assist with student recruitment and retention efforts.
  • Professional Development : Participate in professional development opportunities to maintain their own expertise and certifications.
  • Technical Knowledge :

  • Welding Processes : Possess a deep understanding of various welding processes.
  • Blueprint Reading : Be proficient in reading and interpreting blueprints, welding symbols, and technical drawings.
  • Metallurgy : Have a solid knowledge of welding metallurgy and material science principles.
  • Inspection : Be familiar with weld testing, including destructive and non-destructive testing methods, and the use of inspection tools.
  • Qualifications and Skills

  • Experience : A minimum of 3-5 years of hands-on welding experience is generally expected, with a proven track record of excellent welding skills, and supervisory experience.
  • Certifications :
  • A professional welding certification from the American Welding Society or Certified Welding Supervisor (CWS).

  • Technical Skills :
  • In-depth knowledge of various welding processes (SMAW, GMAW / MIG, GTAW / TIG, FCAW).

  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints and welding symbols.
  • Familiarity with industry codes and standards (e.g., AWS D1.1, ASME Section IX).
  • Soft Skills :
  • Excellent leadership and team management abilities.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Effective problem-solving and critical thinking.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and a commitment to quality.
  • The ability to work well under pressure and manage multiple priorities.
  • Education and Experience

  • Associates degree OR AWS
  • Work Environment

    This is primarily an office position, but it requires frequent work in the manufacturing and production facility. The production area is hot, dusty, and loud, with many moving parts. Due to these conditions, you must be cautious and constantly aware of your surroundings, as safety is always your responsibility.

    Travel

    Advanced notification given if needed, and would be no greater than 10% a year

    Physical Demands

    While performing the duties of this Job, the employee required to use hands and fingers to handle or feel. The employee is required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and / or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus
