Definition

Under direction, performs Registered Nurse (RN)duties by providing care for students and assists in the implementation of health programs and health education services; assesses patients, byobtaining relevant information, and documenting appropriate information; provides health information, direction, and counseling based on their specific injury, illness, or concern and physician's recommendations to remediate problems; maintains clean and sanitized examination rooms for patient visits; ensures all supplies and equipment are sanitized, organized and adequately stocked; prepares and maintains confidential medical records; and performsother duties as assigned.

Supervision

Works under the direct supervision of the department manager.

Does not directly or indirectly supervise other employees but may provide work direction to lower-level employees, temporary employees, and/or student workers.

SCHEDULE
Monday - Friday: 12 PM - 5 PM
This is a temporary substitute position on an as needed basis. Schedule will vary as needed for coverage.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following duties and responsibilities are typical of those performed in this classification.

  • Performs RN duties byproviding care for students and assists in the implementation of health programs and health education services.

  • Assesses patients by obtaining relevant information and documenting appropriate information including performing general patient assessments.

  • Provides health information, direction, and counseling to patients based on their specific injury, illness, or concern and physician's recommendations to remediate problems; distributes printed materials and other resources and provides referrals to other community and health resources and professionals as applicable.

  • Maintains clean and sanitized examination rooms for patient visits; ensures all supplies and equipment are sanitized, organized and adequately stocked.

  • Prepares and maintains confidential medical records by documenting medical information, condition, treatment, advice, and referrals on medical charts and organizing the files and information to facilitate retrieval in compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations.

  • Collects and analyzes patient data to identify trends and calculates relevant statistics for regular reporting.

  • Administers injections for vaccines, monitors for adverse reactions, and follows-up as necessary.

  • Performs routine screening for patients; notifies the patient of the results.

  • Treats wounds by performing appropriate first aid and dressings as determined by the nature of the injury or condition.

  • Provides crisis intervention by assessing the patient and situation and involving the appropriate parties as necessary to resolve the situation and treat patients.

  • Responds to District emergencies by providing first-aid and conveying relevant information to prehospital providers.

  • Administers first-aid care for injured persons triaging based on severity, applying treatments where possible, providing appropriate referrals, and contacting prehospital providers and/or College Police, as necessary.

  • Contacts and/or meets with patients as necessary to monitor progress and compliance with care plans and evaluate and deliver test results.

  • Maintains the inventory of current medical and surgical supplies, ordering medications, antibiotics, and other supplies as necessary and safely discarding outdated products on a monthly basis.

  • Assists in updating nursing and office policies and procedures.

  • Creates and maintains handouts on health-related topics for health center patients and visitors; serves as a technical resource to staff, patients, and others concerning nursing functions, activities, and related services by responding to inquiries and providing information concerning related laws, rules, regulations, practices, and procedures.

  • Creates and coordinates health education events and programs for the District.

  • May provide work direction to lower-level employees, temporary employees, and/or student workers.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

The education, training, and experience qualifications are considered likely to provide the required knowledge and abilities to perform the above essential duties.

Education and Experience:

Two (2) years of current Registered Nurse experience.

Licenses/Certifications/Other Requirements:

  • Must possessand maintain a current California license as a Registered Nurse.

  • Must possess and maintain a current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) provider card (American Red Cross or American Heart Association).

Knowledge of:

  • Current nursing terminology, practices, procedures, and techniques.

  • Current methods and principles of personal hygiene, health maintenance, and disease prevention.

  • Symptoms, treatment, and therapeutic plans for common illnesses, injuries, and mental health crises.

  • Community resources for health promotion, education, and care.

  • Standard screening and laboratory tests.

  • Modern medical equipment and diagnostic methods.

  • Principles and techniques of performing standard and emergency healthcare and nursing assessments.

  • Current techniques for diagnostic testing.

  • Use and side effects of standard medications.

  • Communicable diseases, including their symptoms, prevention, treatment, control, and precautions.

  • Wound treatment, including appropriate first aid and dressings.

  • Safety precautions and procedures for providing medical care.

  • Proper sanitization techniques for medical supplies and equipment.

  • First aid and CPR.

  • Medical record keeping procedures.

  • Laws, regulations, standards, and/or requirements applicable to areas of assignment.

  • Clerical methods of researching, gathering, organizing, and reporting data.

  • Standard office software and modern office equipment.

  • Correct use of the English language, including spelling, punctuation, and grammar.

  • Principles and practices of customer service.

  • Business arithmetic.

Ability to:

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL STANDARDS:

The following physical and mental standards are identified as necessary to perform the essential duties and responsibilities. However, reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the position.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

  • Work is primarily performed both inside the health center and outside at various campus locations in responding to a medical emergency.
