Job description

AmeriCorps Public Ally Opportunities at NMILC

Engage in a meaningful year of service at NMILC! For 10 months, AmeriCorps Public Ally members serve local organizations in New Mexico, helping them address a pressing community needs. Here at New Mexico Immigrant Law Center we have the following roles that could be filled by an AmeriCorps members for the 2026-27 service term that begins in early October.

Deportation Defense and Survivor of Crime Programs

The Public Ally will provide capacity building support to NMILC's legal teams that provide critical legal services to low-income asylum seekers and survivors of crime and violence from around the world. They will help streamline processes by preparing asylum forms for attorney review, improve the flow/efficiency of ongoing monthly clinics, and prepare country conditions research that can be used as evidence for many future cases for other applicants from the same regions.

Children's Program

The Public Ally will work on behalf of immigrant youth who need legal assistance with their immigration status. They will fulfill a critical piece of this process by creating Know Your Rights materials, template form letters, and sample Medicaid packets. They will also help coordinate pro bono attorneys who prepare the immigration and family law/juvenile law petition. They will also provide information on how to apply for an EIN number and professional and occupational licensure options.

Citizenship and DACA Program

The Public Ally will provide capacity building support for this program's ongoing monthly "Wednesday Workshops" for DACA/residency as well as Citizenship Fairs, by helping to improve the efficiency and systems of the workshop flow and processes. To support this, they will also answer calls to the legal help line, respond to voicemails and provide brief support to community members who are interested in attending NMILC citizenship and DACA in-person or remote workshops. A typical day may also include requesting documents from potential clients, drafting forms, reviewing mail and files, and maintaining the electronic cases management system for clients.

Economic Justice Program

The Public Ally will be responsible for supporting requests from community members and partners for assistance with EIN process, licensing, and business formation. The Public Ally will help coordinate economic justice workshops and events, building capacity for NMILC legal teams to provide legal services. They will also develop information that is accessible to community partners and community members eligible for services.

Volunteer and Pro Bono Program

The Public Ally will be responsible for supporting requests from volunteers and pro bono attorneys to support our immigrant rights programming. They will also support coordinating our volunteers for legal workshops and clinics and communications with volunteers.

All Public Ally/AmeriCorps members will be provided with a living stipend through AmeriCorps National, options for health insurance, potential student loan forbearance, and an AmeriCorps Education Award to be used towards future tuition or to pay back qualified student loans.

Please fill out this application to indicate interest in any of these Public Allies roles at NMILC. We will review your materials and you may be selected for an information interview as a next step.
