JOB TITLE : Marketing and Public Relations Associate
REPORTS TO : Director of Development and Marketing
POSITION SUMMARY
The Greater Birmingham Humane Society’s (“the GBHS”) Marketing and Public Relations Associate (“the Associate”) is responsible for achieving three primary objectives :
- Understanding of the GBHS audience, brand, and all components of the GBHS mission.
- Creating relevant unified, and compelling messaging those people find valuable.
- Successfully delivering messaging to those the GBHS audience through a variety of communications channels including traditional media, digital media, print newsletters / appeals, email blasts, etc.
The goal of the Associate is to work with the Director of Development & Marketing to advance the GBHS' position with relevant constituents, and drive broader awareness, volunteer, and donor support for the GBHS. The Associate executes all GBHS’ marketing, communication, and public relations activities, both external and internal, as assigned by the Director of Development and Marketing. They help develop and implement marketing materials and content for all the GBHS’ programs, work with other marketing, communications, development, and public relations staff, and coordinate at the strategic and tactical levels with the other functions of the GBHS.
Primary Relationships
The Associate reports to the Director of Development & Marketing.This position works with the marketing and development team in charting the direction of the GBHS, assuring its accountability to all constituencies, and ensuring its effective operation.Within GBHS, the position has primary working relationships with the Director of Development & Marketing, the Marketing and Social Media Coordinator, Development Department, vendors for the department, and service providers.Outside the agency, the position coordinates, primarily, with the media and professional associations related to the position’s profession.DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, and Branding :
Responsible for implementing and measuring the success of a comprehensive marketing, communications and public relations plan that advances our mission of helping animals, enhances the GBHS’s image and position with the community, and improves internal and external communications. This includes marketing plans directed solely to function in times of disaster, large animal cruelty cases, puppy mills, etc. These plans will be coordinated by the Director of Development & Marketing.Responsible for design, production, and distribution of all GBHS communications including advertisements, brochures, posters and signage, television, radio, annual report, print and electronic newsletters, print and electronic appeals, website, and news media.Actively engage, cultivate, and manage media relationships to ensure coverage of the GBHS programs, special events, public announcements, and other projects. Exercise judgment to prioritize media opportunities, and prepare talking points, speeches, presentations, and other supporting material as needed.Become an advocate for the GBHS; monitor, listen and respond to users in a “Social” way while solving problems and cultivating donors of time and money.Maintain brand unity and coordinate the appearances of all the GBHS print and electronic materials such as letterhead use of logo, brochures, etc.Work with the Director of Development & Marketing to develop, coordinate, and oversee resources that assist the GBHS programs with the successful marketing, communications, and positioning of their activities.Provide counsel to the GBHS program managers on marketing, communications, and public relations.Conduct regular market research, customer feedback loops, reviews, and trends to inform strategic marketing, communications, and public relations decisions. Work with Director of Development & Marketing to adjust strategies in response to data collected.Stay informed about developments in the fields of marketing, communications and public relations, not-for-profit management and governance, and the specific business of the GBHS and use this information to help the GBHS operate with initiative and innovation.Planning and Budgeting :
Work with marketing and development team to develop a unified standard to evaluate event participation, preparation, and execution to maintain quality standards at all GBHS events and evaluate the success of events after execution.Execute the marketing / public relations strategy that enables the GBHS leadership to cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with targeted, high-level external audiences, including the media and key influencers.Report progress of the marketing, communications, and public relations mission, goals, and financial objectives to the Director of Development & Marketing.Develop short- and long-term plans and budgets for the marketing / communications / public relations function and its activities; monitor progress; assure adherence; and evaluate performance.Recommend short- and long-term organizational goals to the Director of Development & Marketing.Strategy :
Develop and coordinate processes to seek regular input from GBHS’s key constituencies regarding the quality of programs and services and the GBHS’s relevance in the community.Work closely with staff to maintain a consistent message on all fundraising and marketing appeals. Projects may include creating appeal concepts, organizing the print, and mailing of appeals, content creation.Help formulate and administer policies to ensure the integrity of the GBHS.Act as a subject matter expert and internal consultant to bring attention and solutions to institutional priorities.Identify challenges and emerging issues faced by the GBHS. Work with leadership team and staff to recognize internal and external communications opportunities and solutions and define and execute appropriate strategies to support them.Managing :

Passion for the GBHS's mission of helping people and animals.Bachelor's degree in marketing, journalism, communications, or related field is required.Demonstrated experience in :Planning, writing, editing, and production of electronic and print newsletters / appeals
Crafting and distributing of press releasesMedia relationsPhotographyCrafting and distributing of digital and print marketing assets including brochures, presentations, video production, posters, flyers, business cards, banners, etc.Email marketing ( experience with Mailchimp preferred)Event planning and executionExpertise in grammar shown in long or short-from writingDemonstrated skill and comfort in proactively building relationships with top tier reporters and editors, and in successfully positioning subject matter with the media to achieve high-impact placements.Extensive successful writing and editing experience (externally focused) with a variety of print and online communications media.A strong track record of positioning an organization to achieve tangible outcomes in a competitive communications environment.Innovative thinker, with a track record for translating strategic thinking into action plans and output. Ability to operate as an effective tactical as well as strategic thinker.Excellent and persuasive communicator. Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills and the ability to effectively interface with senior management and boards.WORK CONDITIONS
Full-time, non-exempt, 40 hours per week, typically during regular office hours 8 : 30-5 : 00 pm but with the understanding that weekends or after-hours work may be required.Employees may be asked to work extended hours or on weekends and holidays without much advance notice on occasion.Must be able to work with and around animals of all types (cats, dogs, rabbits, birds, etc.). May have exposure conditions such as animal feces, urine, etc. and foul odors.May be exposed to animal dander, parasites and infectious diseases than can be carried and transmitted by animals.Must be able to work in an environment that provides humane euthanasia to animals.Ability to work on a computer and phone for at least 30% of the day.Travel : Ability to drive to and from meetings mostly in the metro area but occasionally throughout the GBHS service area. Some overnight travel is required when attending conferences at the state and / or national level.Ability to work nights and weekends as needed.Requires the physical mobility to sit and walk for moderate periods of time and to occasionally carry or lift objects weighing up to 40 pounds.Meets minimum general requirements for GBHS employment as set forth in GBHS employee handbook.The GBHS is an equal opportunity employer.
