Summary

The Department of Public Administration at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS), invites applications for one tenure-track assistant professor position to begin August 2025. Preference will be given to candidates with emergency / disaster management expertise. The department offers a NASPAA-accredited Master of Public Administration  (MPA) degree and four popular graduate professional certificates , including Homeland Security & Emergency Management, National Security Intelligence, Nonprofit Management, and Public Management.

Essential Functions

The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to :

The typical time allocation for tenure-track faculty in the College of Public Service is 40% teaching, 40% research, and 20% service.

Teaching assignments will primarily be graduate-level Public Administration courses, including MPA core courses.

The positions require a flexible teaching schedule to include evening classes and the ability to teach in various formats (in-seat, hybrid, and online).

The pre-tenure teaching load is 2-2 (4 classes per academic year, typically two classes each fall and spring semester); the post-tenure teaching load is 3-2 (5 classes per academic year).

Tentative Search Timeline

Priority will be given to applications submitted by  November 8, 2024 . However, this posting will remain open until filled.

The potential dates for video interviews with the search committee are December 3 & 5, 2024.

The potential dates for campus interviews with the supervisor, appointing authority, and other stakeholders are January 23-January 31, 2025.

The potential employee start date is  August 2025.

Qualifications

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

PhD in Public Administration, Public Policy, Public Affairs, or related social science discipline from an accredited institution. ABD candidates will be considered; however, PhD must be conferred by August 17, 2025.

Applicants must be able to teach classes in emergency management, especially with a focus on local, regional, and state emergency management and the whole community through disaster coordination, preparedness, planning, and recovery, as well as Incident Command Systems (ICS).

Ability to teach one or more MPA core courses, such as Introduction to Public Administration and Public Service, Organizational Management and Behavior, Ethics and Leadership, Economics and Public Finance, The Policy Process and Democracy, or Research and Analytic Methods is required.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience teaching homeland security and emergency management at the graduate level is preferred.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to teach a class in public budgeting and public finance.

Experience with local, regional, state, and federal emergency management agencies, as well as other nonprofit and governmental agencies in the homeland security and emergency management fields, is a plus.
