Job description

Postdoctoral Fellowship in Computational Humanities and Publishing

The Carnegie Mellon University Libraries and Carnegie Mellon University Press invite applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Computational Humanities and Publishing. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who thrives in an interesting and challenging work environment. This two-year, full-time position is built for a scholar-practitioner eager to develop community around a new digital humanities initiative, gain experience in project management, and contribute to the development of emerging forms of knowledge production.

The fellow will divide their time between two key initiatives:

Supporting the Computational Humanities academic programs and lab space, a new CMU initiative fostering community, curriculum, and collaboration at the intersection of the humanities and computation.

Developing and managing editorial and production workflows for a new imprint of non-traditional, multimodal publishing projects under the aegis of CMU Press.

This fellowship provides an opportunity to gain hands-on experience with academic publishing, program coordination, and community-centered scholarly communication, while delivering impact to CMU's new programs in the digital and computational humanities.

Core responsibilities will include:

  • Community Convening: Help build a vibrant, universal community within the Computational Humanities Lab through events and workshops, coworking hours, and student engagement.
  • Practicum Support: Facilitate applied research experiences for students, working closely with CH/Libraries faculty and staff.
  • Documentation and Outreach: Maintain digital presence for the program and lab, highlighting student and faculty work.
  • Mentorship and Learning: Direct student assistants.
  • Production Oversight: Design and coordinate the project management, production, and design process for multimodal publications
  • Editorial Process Support: Manage author communications
  • Mentorship and Learning: Supervise student assistants and develop universal and collaborative publishing workflows for digital.

Adaptability, excellence, and passion are vital qualities within Carnegie Mellon University. We are in search of a team member who can optimally interact with a varied population of internal and external partners at a high level of integrity. We are looking for someone who shares our values and who will support the mission of the university through their work.

You should demonstrate:

  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Commitment to fostering community and belonging in academic spaces

Qualifications:

  • PhD in the humanities, humanistic social sciences, or a related interdisciplinary field (degree must be awarded by start date).
  • Demonstrated interest in computational/digital humanities, public scholarship, or new forms of publishing.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience facilitating events, teaching, or supporting collaborative research
  • Experience with scholarly production workflows
  • Familiarity with digital publishing tools and platforms such as GitHub, LaTeX, Manifold, etc.

Professional Development:

The fellow will participate in professional development opportunities aligned with their role and their goals. They will have the opportunity to co-author publications, present at relevant conferences, and contribute to the ongoing development of the new computational humanities program.

Additional information:

  • Sponsorship: Applicants for this position must be currently legally authorized to work for CMU in the United States. CMU will not sponsor or take over the sponsorship of an employment visa for this opportunity. Carnegie Mellon is not a qualifying employer for the STEM OPT benefit: only the 12-month OPT may be used to work at Carnegie Mellon.
  • Fixed-term: This is a fixed-term position with an estimated duration of 2 years.
