The Workplace Violence (WPV) Program Specialist is a de-escalation expert who works collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams across Billings Clinic, its affiliates, and extends to other organizations developing and implementing evidence-based practices that support teams and individuals in reducing / preventing workplace violence. The Workplace Violence Program Specialist oversees the Workplace Violence Prevention Team and all subcommittees work. This individual partners with the Magnet and Safety and Emergency Management Manager(s) / Director(s) to ensure proper reporting, continued accreditation, and alignment with Billings Clinic’s Nursing and organizational strategic plans.

Essential Job Functions

  • Supports and models behaviors consistent with the mission and philosophy of Billings Clinic and department / service.
  • Champions and exemplifies behaviors that align with the mission, vision, and values of Billings Clinic and the department / service line.
  • Serves as a clinical leader and role model, fostering a culture of safety, accountability, and excellence in patient care.
  • Provides strategic oversight of WPV prevention initiatives, ensuring alignment with regulatory standards and evidence-based practices.
  • Leads comprehensive reviews and documentation of WPV Safety Net events, ensuring timely follow-up, root cause analysis, and mitigation planning.
  • Facilitates WPV Prevention Team meetings and actively participates in subgroup initiatives to support system-wide safety improvements.
  • Behavioral Emergency Response Team (BERT) Program - Develops, implements, and evaluates the BERT or equivalent behavioral response program, ensuring clinical effectiveness, staff readiness, and patient-centered outcomes.
  • Oversees team structure, training, deployment, and performance metrics; reports trends and outcomes to nursing and operational leadership.
  • Conducts proactive rounding on high-risk patients / families, applying clinical judgment to anticipate and de-escalate behavioral health concerns.
  • Maintains documentation and data to support Magnet designation and re-designation efforts.
  • Engages frontline nursing staff in shared governance and continuous improvement processes.
  • Designs and delivers education based on staff feedback, clinical trends, and Magnet standards.
  • Performs in-depth clinical chart reviews of safety events to identify WPV-related behavioral patterns and care implications.
  • Documents clinical rationale for WPV mitigation strategies and ensures compliance with internal and external reporting requirements.
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to embed WPV prevention into the broader organizational safety framework.
  • Partners with program directors to monitor expenditures, ensuring fiscal responsibility and alignment with budgetary goals.
  • Identifies and pursues funding opportunities to support innovative clinical and safety initiatives.
  • Manages scheduling logistics for WPV Prevention Team operations, ensuring adequate coverage and responsiveness.
  • Coordinates special projects and strategic initiatives on behalf of nursing and program leadership.
  • Leads the collection, analysis, and dissemination of data related to patient behavior, clinical assessments, and outcomes.
  • Facilitates access to evidence-based practice (EBP) resources and supports staff in completing clinical assessments and violence risk tools.
  • Ensures compliance with Magnet®, OSHA, CMS, and other regulatory and accreditation standards.
  • Collaborates with care teams to develop and update individualized patient care plans.
  • Designs and oversees onboarding processes for BERT and WPV team members, ensuring clinical competency and regulatory compliance.
  • Partners with Human Resources to maintain credentialing standards and training requirements.
  • Directs the organization’s crisis intervention program, including curriculum development, training, scheduling, and quality assurance.
  • Serves as a Master Trainer, leading education and competency validation for staff across disciplines.
  • Conducts comprehensive assessments of individuals exhibiting behavioral concerns, integrating clinical, psychological, and social determinants of health.
  • Applies Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs to guide clinical decision-making and intervention planning.
  • Identifies personal and team development goals; ensures compliance with all continuing education and licensure requirements.
  • Maintains current knowledge of best practices, emerging trends, and professional development resources in behavioral health and nursing leadership.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • Minimum 4 Year / Bachelors Degree in nursing
  • Education or formal training in adult education principles
  • Minimum formally trained in crisis intervention / de-escalation techniques at the trainer level
  • Experience

  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in a healthcare environment.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience conducting crisis intervention and / or de-escalation.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in program or office management.
  • Certifications and Licenses

  • Montana Driver's License At hire
