Under the direction of a Senior Transportation Surveyor, the incumbent performs a variety of professional office tasks that include but are not limited to the following : researching survey records, creating job packages for field survey crews, reducing / analyzing field observations, making survey calculations, computing highway alignments, analyzing land survey records, preparing land surveying documents, and performing field reconnaissance. As a Transportation Surveyor, the incumbent is expected to become proficient in the following competencies as described below in order to successfully perform the essential functions of the job, while adhering to and promoting the Department's Mission, Vision, Values, Strategic Imperatives and Goals. Working Conditions
Position(s) located in D7 Los Angeles, Los Angeles County
Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment.
The incumbent will work for extended periods of time at a computer workstation.
- Occasionally, the incumbent may be required to work outdoors as either part of a survey field party or by performing field reconnaissance for survey projects.
This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.
New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.
Special Requirements
Must possess a valid Land-Surveyor-in-Training or equivalent certificate accepted by the California State Board of Registration or graduation from a four-year curriculum in surveying, surveying engineering, or surveying geomatics accepted by the Accreditation Board for Engineering Technology.
Appointment to Range D requires a valid Professional Land Surveying License issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers. For all other ranges, this is not required.
