Job description

As a Recreation Supervisor you are responsible for the proper management of all aspects of the McMurdo Recreation department, including but not limited to, equipment selection, procurement, and recreation program design.

POSITION : Recreation Supervisor

SEASON : Austral Summer (Summer 2025-2026)

LOCATION : McMurdo Station, Antarctica

SALARY : $864 - $982 per week

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Establishes, plans, and implements standard operating procedures as they relate to the recreation department.
  • Supervises the requisitioning, receiving, inventory control, and product / supply needs for resupply.
  • Recruits, evaluates and hires contract part time "on ice" POC staff from interested applicants.
  • Establishes the expectations set for all POC and part time staff.
  • Approves all changes of Recreation operations.
  • Manages recreation POC staff personnel to ensure proper standards of operation are being followed.
  • Resources, markets, and recruits' volunteers when required.
  • Handles the financial affairs of the Recreation department in an efficient and professional manner when applicable.
  • Communicates with McMurdo personnel to develop and improve the Recreation department programs and services to the community.
  • Performs duties in support of Operations Division metrics. Trains and orients subordinate employees on performance, documentation and activities that effect the achievement of Operations Division metrics.
  • Adequately and honestly tracks all data related to metrics.
  • Participates in MCI trainings and drill as determined by supervisor.
  • Supports the achievement of ASC metrics, whether metrics can be directly or indirectly affected by this position's activities.
  • Provides direct support, using staff resources if necessary, to the achievement of all metrics related to ASC.
  • Complies with all ASC Environmental Health & Safety, and Quality Assurance, requirements and goals. Provides documentation to these divisions as necessary to ensure adequate and legal documentation.
  • Ensures that all subordinate employees are trained and understand ASC Environmental Health & Safety, and Quality Assurance, requirements and goals. Maintain documentation as necessary to meet these requirements.
  • Responsible for implementing and maintaining a safe workplace program and ensuring that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.
  • Communicates professionally, both orally and in writing, with their subordinates as needed to relay information in order to be successful in their positions. This includes, but is not limited to, staff meetings, performance appraisals, job requirements, division metrics, projects, Quality Standard Procedures, and safety practices.
  • Handles confidential matters (personnel actions, management reports, etc.) in accordance with management policy.
  • Interacts with the National Science Foundation, military and other agency officials, both over the telephone and in person, in a professional and tactful manner.
  • Performs weekly upkeep / maintenance on gym equipment to include (but not limited to) lubricating / aligning / tightening belts, deep cleans, fixing torn seats and benches.
  • Performs other duties as required.

EDUCATION :

  • Bachelor's degree in Recreation or similar field required.
  • Relevant experience accepted in lieu of a degree.
  • CERTIFICATIONS AND / OR LICENSING REQIREMENTS :

  • Current ServSafe Food Handler certificate must be obtained prior to deployment to Antarctica.
  • Valid driver's license
  • Valid U.S. Passport
  • EXPERIENCE :

  • Minimum of four years of experience in a recreation field required.
  • Two years supervisory experience required.
  • Previous experience with Station Services in Antarctica may be accepted in lieu of minimum experience.
  • OTHER :

  • US citizenship or permanent residency required
  • A prerequisite of employment for this position is to successfully gain a favorable Tier 1 - Elevated Background Investigation (EBI) result prior to deployment.
