POSITION SUMMARY

Faculty in this position will be responsible for establishing an internationally recognized, extramurally funded research program with a focus on student involvement and mentorship. Faculty in this role will ensure student research achievement, build strategic collaborative partnerships, and contribute to institutional service activities. He / she will perform other duties to further the mission of the research department and the Noorda College of Osteopathic Medicine.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Establish an externally funded research program.

  • Ensures productivity of data gathering by performing research, training and overseeing post-docs, graduate students and lab techs.
  • Manages research training of pre-matriculation undergraduate students and actively creates training content and materials to ensure success.
  • Identifies appropriate extramural funding mechanisms and takes lead, as PI, in submitting applications to obtain said funding. Submits average of 6 applications per year until adequate funding to maintain research agenda is obtained.
  • Prepares manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals.
  • Promotes medical student and pre-matriculation student involvement in research activities. Provides opportunities for student contribution to peer-review journals including data gathering, analyzing, figure preparation, manuscript and grant writing.
  • Directs the day-to-day management of research activities (facilitating meetings, ensuring adherence to college policies, practices and protocols, preparation of annual departmental report and all other reporting requirements).
  • Develops research budget recommendations for approval and assumes fiscal accountability for prudent management of financial resources, ensuring adherence to college practices (preparing and submitting annually, monitoring expenditures, reconciling monthly, examining income / expense statements, assessing needs [operating and capital], ensuring optimal utilization of facilities and resources, following protocols, formulating recommendations, effectively documenting, etc.
  • Oversees / manages direct reports and assigned department(s) (defining / outlining roles and responsibilities, assigning tasks / projects, coordinating cohesive productivity, providing guidance toward optimal performance, clarifying / instructing on duties, deadlines, and expectations, reviewing / conducting performance evaluations).
  • Assists with and serves as a resource for problem resolution (trouble-shooting problems, changing duties as demands dictate, delegating and / or re-distributing tasks / projects due to volume or extenuating circumstances, personnel issues administering “due process” protocols, crisis management, etc.)
  • Oversees personnel recordkeeping (vacation, holiday, sick time, etc.) monitoring activities, recording absences, directing the updating of files, etc.

Create, foster, and maintain intra- and inter-collegiate research relationships.

Identifies and builds research relationships for the college with local, regional, national and international research partners that have common interests and a willingness to collaborate with our research team.

  • Publishes jointly with collaborators.
  • In collaboration with external researchers, identifies appropriate extramural funding mechanisms and serves as Co-I on joint grant submissions.
  • Presents on a variety of research topics at various conferences locally, nationally and internationally including developing content, submitting for consideration, finalizing presentation and delivering on time.
  • Collaborates with and / or mentors faculty, staff and students (internal and external) to develop and implement research topics (including formulating concepts, brainstorming approaches, organizing ideas, collecting, analyzing and synthesizing data) in support of preparation of manuscripts for publication and submission for intramural and extramural grants leading to the execution of scholarly research (facilitating the preparation, modifying and refining of proposals and applications, seeking external funding, developing and maintaining positive rapport with funding agencies, etc.)
  • Actively engage in the advancement of Noorda-COM as it relates to the research department.

  • Teaches assigned learning objective in the Research and Biomedical Sciences departments.
  • Builds collaborative partnership opportunities across and among various entities participating in networking opportunities, [internal and external partners [elected officials, state constitutional officers, business and community leaders] other colleges and universities, hospitals, local organizations, societies, etc.] promoting relationships with the College.
  • Refers to and coordinates in advance with the Communications team in the Office of the President on all media contacts, communications, and / or interactions to include message, promotion, etc. in which asked to serve as an official representative, content expert, or spokesperson on behalf of the College.
  • Coordination in advance with the Communications team in the Office of the President on all Noorda-COM related legislative issues to include contact with the national, state, and local government officials, in which asked to serve as an official representative, content expert, or spokesperson on behalf of the College.
  • Serves on various committees and teams within the College as assigned (attending meetings, contributing to discussions, sharing / exchanging information, and leading constituents toward goal attainment) to include advising and mentoring (Students, clubs, campus organizations)
  • Contributes to College’s compliance with and in the development of required documentation as related to accreditation of the College to which departmental content is contributed (faculty adequacy model, gathering data, self-assessment, peer review, providing input / feedback, etc.) aiding in the attainment of academic compliance.
  • Participates in the production of various College materials [academic calendar, strategic planning, directory, College website, etc.] (collecting / preparing materials, organizing / formatting data, adhering to various deadlines, reviewing drafts, providing input / feedback, etc.).
  • Contributes to the College’s reputation / image of being one of the best osteopathic medical colleges (monitoring outcomes, partnering with internal and external stakeholders, modifying techniques, etc.).
  • Is knowledgeable of and remains in compliance with all institutional policies and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook for Noorda-COM.
  • Contribute to the research team by performing other duties as needed / assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Education and Certification :

    Terminal degree in an appropriate health related science. US citizenship or permanent residency is required.

    Experience :

  • Candidates should have experience in grant writing (preferably NIH) and a track record of research productivity as evidence of potential for sustained extramurally funded research program development.
  • Demonstration of effective performance in research and teaching
  • Creative and scholarly work commensurate with appointment to the level of Assistant Research Professor or above
  • Evidence of effective, consistent mentor of students, pre-doctoral fellows, post-graduate residents / fellows, and / or faculty-peers
  • Evidence of creating opportunities for resource sharing
  • Demonstration of experience with planning and budgeting
  • Evidence of successful department resource allocation
  • Knowledge of curriculum design and program assessment
  • Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with IRB and / or IACUC protocol preparation.
  • Successful current or prior grant funding.
