We will achieve this aspiration through a college-wide commitment to our vision. Rhodes' rigorous approach to liberal arts and sciences inspires students to discover and cultivate lifelong passions and make a difference in the classroom, on campus, in the city of Memphis, and worldwide. Simply put, our mission is to prepare students for life and career, wherever those journeys take them. The Division of Student Life plays an integral role in the College's vision and values, and every member supports the delivery of a transformative student experience.
The Residence Life Coordinator is responsible for supporting and enhancing the effectiveness of the Office of Residence Life, as well as participating in the development of a comprehensive residential experience for students.
This position is a critical part of the Residence Life staff team, supervising student staff and providing direct care and support to students in a residential environment. The Residence Life Coordinator helps build a comprehensive and holistic residence hall program. The position includes weeklong on-call duty responsibilities, broad communication responsibilities, and regular contact with students in a fast-paced and often ambiguous environment.
This is a 12-month, fully-benefited position that is required to live on the Rhodes College campus in assigned housing.
Job duties include, but are not limited to, the following :
- Recruit, select, train, supervise, and evaluate student support staff. Provide daily supervision for 10-15 resident assistants serving approximately 460-500 students and manage multiple residence hall buildings.
- Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and policies.
- Meet biweekly with Resident Assistants or on an as-needed basis, and coordinate and facilitate weekly staff meetings with them.
- Assist in the opening and closing of the residence halls, assist with roommate assignments in the housing software system, issue and inventory residence hall keys, and track the maintenance of residence hall buildings.
- Regularly attend division, committee, and departmental staff meetings. Serve on various campus committees as needed.
- Facilitate resident relocations in the residence hall supervisory area.
- Collaborate with housekeeping and facilities to help maintain a living environment conducive to learning.
- Advise, counsel, and seek to develop residents in alignment with the department's mission, vision, and strategies to create and sustain a supportive residential educational environment.
- Assist, supervise, and evaluate Resident Assistants on community development, program development, and program execution. Attend Resident Assistant programs and oversee the assessment of programs to determine effectiveness.
- Serve in the on-call rotation for crisis intervention and emergency assistance in coordination with Residence Life and Student Life on-call staff.
- Conduct prompt, equitable, and impartial investigations related to alleged violations of the Student Code of Conduct and other College policies.
- Work collaboratively with Campus Safety, Community Standards, Counseling Center, Academic Learning & Resources, Physical Plant, Student Engagement, and other student life departments to provide exceptional student assistance.
- Advocate for and support students, especially in crisis and urgent situations, by hearing concerns and complaints, communicating effectively with family members or guardians, and creating a plan for coordinated care with appropriate campus partners. Assist with evacuating residential students and relocation as determined by Rhodes College. This includes inclement weather or other living conditions requiring college evacuation.
