Job description

Job ID : 2890760 | Amazon.com Services LLC

The System Engineer plays a crucial role in the Amazon Robotics deployment team. They oversee the installation, troubleshooting, integration, and commissioning of Amazon Robotics equipment in new and existing fulfillment centers (FCs). This field engineering based position demands strong technical skills for deploying robotic equipment, including working with mechanical systems, electrical, configuring networking, and coordinating software systems. Ideal candidates have experience with complex electro-mechanical and network systems. They should also demonstrate leadership in leading the installation, maintenance, upgrades, or troubleshooting of these systems.

System engineers will work with a team of 1-5 engineers and collaborate with an on-site project manager to provide technical oversight on the installation of both third party and Amazon designed robotics equipment. These deployments require extensive collaboration with various stakeholders, including third-party installers, contracted engineers, construction, hardware, software, IT, and other partner teams. Strong communication skills are essential for interacting with both internal and external partners and customers. As an Amazonian, the candidate must demonstrate independent initiative to identify and solve problems in real time during deployments. They will also drive continuous improvement initiatives to avoid recurrences. This systems engineer position is a leadership role within the on-site deployment teams. Candidates should have a proven track record of successfully leading work scopes and making effective decisions.

Systems engineers will be deploying the robotic systems in various phases of a product life cycle. When supporting new products, the candidate is required to lead the development of process documentation and modifying the existing processes. Strong technical understanding, love for field work, and a keen interest in diving deep into the understanding of Amazon’s robotics systems are key attributes for this role. As an Amazonian, the ability to recognize process gaps and take ownership in developing solutions are important. Project duration can range from a few days to several months and include travel across the US. International work is available for candidates interested in pursuing. This position requires 75% travel. Valid US drivers’ license required.

Relocation to Amazon Corporate offices in Seattle, Boston, or Austin will be required for the role.

Critical Skills :

  • Proficiency in reading, developing technical documentation, and writing process instructions.
  • Experience handling multiple priorities in a fast-paced, field-based construction or warehouse environment.
  • Must be proficient in standard office software tools and processes.
  • Expertise in robotics, complex electro-mechanical systems, and networked engineering, including knowledge of robotic components and software.
  • Strong initiative and ability to work independently, while reporting to leadership.
  • Excellent communication skills for customer-facing interactions and data reporting on project status and technology deployments.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to capture lessons learned, conduct retrospective reviews, and drive continuous improvement projects.
  • Capability to function independently, manage a team of 1-5 engineers and related trades during deployments.
  • Proficiency in integrated schedule management to coordinate with different teams both within and outside of Amazon Robotics.
  • Ability to oversee and resolve escalations during robotics deployment including quality hand-off, live order testing, site acceptance testing, operational readiness testing, monitoring system performance, etc.
  • Responsible for delivering projects by owning key performance indicators related to on-time delivery, cost, quality, safety, and sustainability.
  • Understanding of data collection, reporting processes, and ability to make data-driven decisions.

Key job responsibilities

Support and guide installation of robotic technologies at Amazon fulfillment centers. The systems engineer develops detailed knowledge of the operation of robotic systems and guides installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting of these systems both on site and remotely. The scopes vary significantly in length and include heavy travel to both live warehouses and new construction sites. The systems engineer will generate and implement continuous improvement ideas around their work-scopes and lead teams of other engineers on projects.
