Job Summary :
The position is responsible for leading, training, and mentoring student-athletes in a specific sport. The coach develops strategies to improve athletic performance while fostering teamwork, discipline, and personal growth. They ensure that all practices, games and activities align with school policies and promote health and safety of students.
Candidates must complete an on-line application which requires a valid IVP Arizona fingerprint clearance card, Coach Referral Form and the required NFHS Certificates.
Key Responsibilities :
This section outlines the primary duties and key responsibilities required for this role, detailing the essential tasks and functions necessary to perform the job successfully, with or without reasonable accommodations.
- Design and lead practices to improve individual and team performance while developing game plans tailored to opponents
- Developing values of sportsmanship, discipline, teamwork and the ability to balance academics with athletics
- Foster a positive team culture which is inclusive, respectful, goal oriented and can address and work through team conflicts
- Maintain and coordinate practice, game, and transportation schedules, scores, records and evaluations
- Enforce school and AIA rules for eligibility, safety protocols, changes to rules and regulations and player conduct
- Communicate effectively with parents, guardians, school staff, booster club, and community members
- Assists with other assigned duties as appropriate to the area of assignment and Mesa Public Schools
- A high school or GED is preferred
- Current IVP fingerprint card
- NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching Certificate
- NFHS Concussion in Sports Certificate
- Background as a player in the sport, either at the high school or collegiate level is preferred
- Previous experience as an assistant or head coach at any level is preferred
- Understanding of the sports rules, strategies, techniques, equipment, safety protocols and best practices
- Models the attributes and skills of the MPS Portrait of a Graduate
- Demonstrates commitment to the MPS Promise that every student is known by name, served by strength and need, and graduates ready for college, career and community
- Sport specific knowledge of fundamentals, training and conditioning, game strategy development, and safety protocols
- Evaluate performance data and develop plans of improvement for your players
- Ability to be flexible with injuries, scheduling conflicts and eligibility requirements
- Effectively mediate and resolve conflicts among team members, parents, and staff
- Stay updated on the latest coaching techniques and training methods through clinics, books, colleague feedback
- Indoor and outdoor settings depending on sport
- Travel for away games, tournaments and team or training camps
- Irregular hours including early mornings, evenings, weekends and possible holiday tournaments
- Interactions with student-athletes, parents, booster members, and other school staff and coaches
- Physical activity requiring standing, walking, bending, stretching, running and demonstrating athletic techniques
- Ability to lift and carry necessary sports equipment up to 50 lbs.
