Job description

Scientific Adventures for Girls (SAfG) provides afterschool STEM programs for TK - 6th grade children, with a focus on girls and underserved youth in the San Francisco East Bay Area. Our mission is to promote gender equity in STEM fields by engaging young girls in hands-on learning experiences that foster positive attitudes toward science and technology.

Position Overview

SAfG is seeking an Executive Director to lead the organization's administration, programs, and strategic planning. We are looking for a strong, visionary leader to drive growth and expansion.

Reporting directly to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will oversee the organization's leadership team, managing three Directors (Operations, Programs, Business Development). Additionally, they will provide oversight for six full-time staff members and up to eight part-time staff.

This is a hybrid role which requires three days per week in our Berkeley office and two remote workdays. The Executive Director is expected to be present in person to oversee staff and provide hands-on leadership.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Vision & Organizational Leadership : Work with the Board to define and execute the organization's mission, vision, and strategic objectives. Set long-term goals and create actionable plans for growth and impact.
  • Staff Management & Leadership : Directly manage and support the Directors of Business Development, Programs, and Operations, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and professional development. Provide leadership to staff, ensuring that organizational goals are met and that team members are engaged and motivated.
  • Operational Oversight : Oversee the day-to-day operations of the organization, ensuring that operational projects are implemented efficiently, on time, and within budget. Ensure compliance with organizational policies and best practices.
  • Program Delivery Oversight : Collaborate with the Director of Programs to ensure that high-quality STEM education programs are delivered to underserved children, with a focus on continuous improvement and measurable outcomes.
  • Strategic Outreach & Fundraising Oversight : Collaborate with the Director of Business Development to ensure fundraising goals are met and SAfG grows in relevance both locally and nationally.
  • Board Management & Engagement : Serve as the main point of contact for the Board of Directors, providing regular updates on the organization's activities, financial health, and strategic initiatives. Support board development and engagement to ensure active participation and contribution to organizational goals.
  • Resource Management : Work with the Director of Operations to manage the organization's resources, including staff, budget, facilities, and technology, ensuring that all operational needs are met and aligned with organizational goals.
  • Outreach & Advocacy : Support outreach efforts to raise awareness about the organization's mission, including engagement with schools, community groups, and local organizations. Represent the organization at events, conferences, and meetings with partners, policymakers, and other stakeholders in the Bay Area when the Director of Business Development. Advocate for the importance of STEM education for underserved youth, particularly girls, and promote the organization's impact in advancing equity in education.
  • Communication & Marketing : Create the Communications Strategy for the year and oversee the development and implementation, including marketing, social media, and public relations efforts, to raise the profile of the organization and effectively communicate its mission and impact to external audiences.
  • Evaluation Oversight : Oversee the implementation of evaluations of all programs, ensuring continuous improvement and measurable outcomes. Work with the Director of Programs to monitor program performance and ensure alignment with organizational goals.
  • Crisis Management & Problem-Solving : Provide leadership in times of organizational challenges or change, offering solutions to problems and ensuring that the organization remains adaptable and focused on its mission.

Required Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in education, nonprofit management, business administration, or a related field (Master's degree preferred).
  • Minimum of a solid 10 years of leadership experience in a nonprofit, education, or youth development setting, at Director level.
  • Experience in program development, administration, and evaluation, particularly in afterschool or elementary education programs.
  • Experience managing budgets and financial oversight for a nonprofit organization.

  • Strong ability to lead and inspire a small team of staff and volunteers.
  • Experience in strategic planning and organizational development.

  • Program & Community Engagement

  • Passion for child development and educational equity.
  • Experience building partnerships with schools, community organizations, and local stakeholders.
  • Strong understanding of best practices in afterschool programming and youth development.
  • Experience in program evaluation and strong analytical skills.
  • Fundraising & Financial Stewardship

  • Experience in nonprofit funding streams, including grants, individual giving, corporate sponsorships, and fundraising events.
  • Ability to develop and manage an annual budget and financial plans.
  • Communication & Advocacy

  • Strong public speaking, writing, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to serve as the public face of the organization, engaging with media, funders, and community partners.
  • Experience advocating for policies that support afterschool education and youth development.
  • Operational & Compliance Knowledge

  • Familiarity with nonprofit governance, legal compliance, and board relations.
  • Understanding of HR best practices, including staff development and performance management.
  • Proficiency in using technology for program management, communication, and data tracking (e.g., CRM systems, Asana, Google Workspace).
  • Preferred Qualifications
