Job description

Sr Accountant - FA08BE

We're determined to make a difference and are proud to be an insurance company that goes well beyond coverages and policies. Working here means having every opportunity to achieve your goals - and to help others accomplish theirs, too. Join our team as we help shape the future.

This position is within the Accounting Operations group, reporting to the Corporate Controllers organization, and is primarily responsible for the GAAP financial close and quarterly and annual statutory (Blue Book) reporting, including annual state filings and survey requests for the Employee Benefits segment.

The team partners closely with multiple business areas to ensure accurate and complete GAAP financial reporting for Employee Benefits by Line of Business and on a consolidated basis. This role offers significant exposure to key areas within Finance, including Employee Benefits FP&A, Actuarial, Group Reinsurance Plus, and Treasury, and is a key contributor to the monthly financial close process.

In addition, this role provides opportunities to identify process improvement initiatives and is empowered to help design and implement solutions that enhance efficiency, controls, and reporting quality.

This role will have a Hybrid work arrangement, with the expectation of working in an office ( Hartford,CT ) 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).

Responsibilities:

  • Review, validate, and understand underlying data from administrative and financial systems to ensure accurate reporting; support Line of Business Finance, Reinsurance, and Actuarial teams by responding to inquiries and resolving data-related issues.

  • Analyze financial results by product line for reasonableness by comparing actuals to outlook and prior year; investigate material variances, identify key drivers, and determine whether adjustments are required.

  • Develop, maintain, and run system allocations and management reports using the general ledger and TM1.

  • Perform monthly reconciliations of complex balance sheet accounts; identify root causes of reconciling items and recommend corrective actions.

  • Review key balance sheet line items for reasonableness and research material period-over-period changes to clearly explain drivers.

  • Prepare and review quarterly and annual statutory reporting, including Exhibit of Life, Schedule T, and other statutory exhibits, state pages, supplemental forms, and survey requests.

  • Support audit and control activities in accordance with The Hartford's policies, including SOX, internal audit, external audit, and other regulatory bodies.

  • Lead the evaluation and enhancement of existing processes, workflows, and procedures, ensuring documentation is sufficiently detailed to support ongoing operations and issue resolution.

  • Lead and participate in projects impacting financial systems, including platform enhancements and special initiatives.

  • Lead and contribute to special projects requiring accounting expertise; perform ad hoc analyses and provide well-supported recommendations.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

  • Minimum of 6 years of experience in insurance accounting, including statutory reporting experience (Blue Book experience preferred).

  • Experience with financial systems, including general ledger, financial reporting tools, and administrative systems.

  • Strong critical thinking, analytical, and quantitative skills with a high attention to detail.

  • Ability to learn quickly, work independently, and collaborate effectively as part of a team.

  • Strong communication, technical accounting, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

  • Demonstrated ownership and accountability for meeting objectives and delivering high-quality results.
