Occupational Summary :

This position is a tenure-track faculty position within the biology department. Teaching responsibilities include courses in (1) human pathophysiology, human physiology including corresponding labs that support the undergraduate Biology program, (2) advanced pathophysiology and advanced human physiology that support both the online Master program in Biomedical Science, and the in-person Doctorate in Nurse Anesthesia program, and (3) additional biology courses for pre-medical and other pre-health professional students.

The teaching load is 24 full-time undergraduate credit hour equivalents per year (based on the load hour conversion model in the Faculty Handbook) or 18 graduate credit hour equivalents. Faculty members also advise and mentor students and serve on university committees.  Development of an undergraduate research program which includes undergraduate students is strongly encouraged.

This position is responsible to cultivate and maintain the institution’s Catholic identity and its mission to empower graduates to transform society. As a member of the Newman University community, the faculty member will join with the institution’s sponsors, the Adorers of the Blood of Christ (ASC Sisters), to witness God’s love in Mission to empower others, foster oneness, celebrate life, form right relationships, and walk as compassionate companions. The faculty member is responsible to uphold this mission in accordance with  Ex Corde Ecclesiae , fostering an environment where Catholicism is present while encouraging an impartial search for truth across multiple disciplines engaged in interdisciplinary dialogue.

Work Performed :

  • Integrate mission values and the Strategic Plan of the University within individual courses and academic programs.
  • Teach students in assigned classes in accordance with course descriptions and / or learning outcomes, the course syllabus, and institutional policies and procedures.
  • Provide students with a syllabus that includes required institutional policies, course objectives, materials, and methods of evaluation.
  • Provide a workload schedule showing teaching and office hours (minimum of 5 office hours per week).
  • Maintain accurate and complete course records and submit final grades by the established deadlines.
  • Communicate with and provide feedback to students in a timely fashion.
  • Develop course curriculum and instructional materials (individually or collaboratively) and participate in their review within the department.
  • Use knowledge of diverse communities and skill sets to diversify teaching methods and delivery of content in instruction.
  • Provide effective instruction to facilitate student learning in all classes taught; evaluate and assess student learning on a regular basis.
  • Participate in assessment activities at course, department, and university level to assist students in achieving designated course objectives or learning outcomes.
  • Use appropriate technologies to enhance classroom or online instruction and to achieve established course objectives or learning outcomes.
  • Regularly evaluate teaching methods and use data to continually improve instructional strategies.
  • Serve on departmental, college, and / or district committees.
  • Attend scheduled discipline, department, division, and college meetings.
  • Participate in required program reviews and the achievement of departmental goals.
  • Comply with all required college-level and program-level accreditation standards.
  • Discuss program, career, or transfer options and other college services with students to support informed academic decisions.
  • Participate in Fall and Winter Institutes, Convocations, Baccalaureate services and Commencement exercises when applicable.
  • Maintain knowledge and competence in the appropriate academic discipline or workforce field.
  • Maintain any required professional certification or licensure in the appropriate academic or technical discipline, where appropriate.
  • Remain current with technological and pedagogical advances that promote continuous improvement of student learning.
  • Participate in one's own performance review and evaluation.
  • Complete all university-required trainings including FERPA and Title IX.
  • Contribute to the overall success of the School of Arts and Sciences by completing other duties as assigned and appropriate to the position.

Required Qualifications :

  • Ph.D. in Biology or related field, M.D. or D.O. Candidates with a MS Degree will be considered if strong evidence of professional expertise is provided with the application .
  • Must be legally authorized to work for any employer in the United States. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa at this time.
  • Preferred Qualifications :

  • Undergraduate and / or graduate teaching experience with preference to graduate teaching experience.
  • Newman University utilizes a cadaver lab for student instruction. Educational experience with human cadavers is preferred.
