Job Summary :

Do you have a passion for investigations? Are you interested in serving the State of Arizona tracking down illegal gambling? Then the Arizona Department of Gaming is looking for you!

The Intelligence Unit Special Agent works under the direction of the Intelligence Unit Supervisor and Manager. Special Agents in the Intelligence Unit are responsible for investigating complaints of illegal gambling to ensure compliance with the Arizona Tribal- State Gaming Compact, State, and Federal laws. Off Reservation complaints of Arizona Revised Statutes Title 13, may include gambling violations, racketeering, money laundering, and illegal criminal enterprises.

Job Duties :

As a Special Agent you will :

  • Conduct criminal investigations of alleged violations of the Arizona Tribal-State Gaming Compact, State, and Federal laws.
  • Document, gather, and preserve evidence for criminal and civil prosecution.
  • Work in an undercover capacity and utilize surveillance techniques and surveillance equipment to document criminal activity. Conduct interviews of witnesses, confidential informants, utilizing physical and digital surveillance, preparing complex affidavits and search warrants, testifying in hearings, grand jury, and court proceedings
  • Participate in the execution of search warrants, arrest warrants, and make arrests where appropriate.
  • Carry a firearm pursuant to the ADG policy and are responsible for the health, safety, and welfare of the public, and the gaming tribes.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs) :

Knowledge of :

  • The Arizona Tribal-State Compact and Appendices.
  • The Arizona Revised Statutes, including A.R.S. and applicable federal laws.
  • Proper case management and have the ability to present the information intelligently in court proceedings.
  • Experience recognizing potential public safety issues in public places / facilities with large populations.
  • Experience recognizing potential threats and dangers that go with working in an undercover capacity.
  • Proper law enforcement procedures for conducting surveillance, undercover operations, and securing evidence properly to be presented in court.
  • Skill in :

  • Basic computer skills and excellent writing skills to prepare comprehensive reports and affidavits pursuant to gambling laws and illegal criminal organizations.
  • Gathering facts, organizing, and comprehending information to make logical interpretations necessary to perform operational duties.
  • Understand investigative techniques, possess interview skills and be able to write factual, understandable, and complete reports.
  • Basic understanding of the Tribal-State Compact, as it relates to the assigned duties.
  • General knowledge of game strategy and betting techniques.
  • Ability to :

  • Qualify annually with their duty weapon, achieving a minimum score of 210.
  • Complete eight (8) hours of continuing education annually.
  • Complete eight (8) hours of proficiency training every three (3) years.
  • To perform static and mobile surveillance in vehicles, or on foot.
  • Affect an arrest or survive an encounter until backup Agents / Officers arrive.
  • Possess better than average communication skills.
  • Be highly vigilant with excellent observation skills that can be documented in the appropriate manner.
  • Selective Preference(s) :

  • Applicants will not be considered if you are not a current or former sworn police officer. The Department of Gaming will not sponsor any applicant in a police academy. Requires unrestricted current certification by the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (AZ P.O.S.T). Applicants must be a certified Arizona peace officer in good standing or be eligible to obtain Arizona peace officer certification via the AZPOST waiver process within 6 months of hire date (AZPOST Waiver Process). To be eligible, a person must have previously served as a certified peace officer in Arizona or another state; must have completed basic and advanced training that demonstrates substantial comparability to the Arizona basic course; and must meet all of the minimum qualifications for certification as an Arizona Peace Officer.
  • Previous experience in police undercover work, preferred
  • Must have proficient interview and interrogation techniques, drafting and executing search warrants, drafting affidavits and testifying in various courts of law, criminal and administrative.
  • Pre-Employment Requirements :

  • Candidates for this position will be required to submit to a criminal history investigation.
  • Requires possession of and ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver’s license appropriate to the assignment. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any required driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code .) Must pass a polygraph examination.
  • All newly hired State employees are subject to and must successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify).
