Job Description Summary

Performs duties relative to preparing surgical specimens for examination by the Pathologist or designee. Receives, prepares and processes all tissue specimens according to laboratory protocol. Supports pathology lab operations to include morgue and autopsy services as required.

Job Description

1. Will transport all surgical specimens to the surgical processing area. Will correctly log and number all surgical specimens.

a. Will transport all surgical specimens at the required times each day.

b. Will log and number each specimen with no error.

c. Will maintain specimen logs correctly and accurately with no error.

d. Will accurately and without error enter pertinent patient and specimen information into the LIS system.

2. Cleans and prepares surgical pathology area for daily activities.

a. Area will be cleaned daily.

b. Area will be prepared each day of use for the Pathologist or designee.

3. Prepares reagents, equipment and instrumentation as required.

a. All reagents will be prepared correctly and made available when required.

b. All equipment and instrumentation will be maintained according to established policies and procedures.

4. Cleans instruments, glassware, work surfaces and maintains morgue.

a. Cleans all instruments, glassware and work surfaces immediately after use.

b. Maintains and cleans morgue as needed on a daily basis.

c. Maintains required supplies in grossing room and morgue.

5. Pre-labels specimen containers and fills with appropriate reagent for fixation.

a. Correctly labels all specimen containers and requisition forms.

b. Fills with appropriate fixative according to all established safety procedures.

c. Maintains supplies of prepared containers.

6. Reports to workstation / assignment on schedule, ready to work and works their entire work schedule unless absence / tardiness / leaving work early is pre-approved by their manager. Any unapproved absence / tardiness / leaving work early will be considered an occurrence (as defined by Human Resources policies VII-D V7 and VIIIB V8, respectively. 0-1 occurrences in a calendar year- consistently exceeds expectations, 2-3 occurrences in a calendar year- consistently meets / sometimes exceeds expectations, 4-5 occurrences in a calendar year- consistently meets expectations, 1 corrective action in a calendar year- developmental / needs improvement, and >

1 corrective action in a calendar year- consistently does not meet standards.

1. Other duties as required.

2. Will maintain and inventory of surgical supplies and equipment. Inventory will be adequate to prevent shortage of supplies. Will assist Histology laboratory personnel in preparation of supply orders.

3. Assist with photographs of pertinent specimens when required.

4. Performs non-technical duties. Will log in all surgical specimens with no errors. Will accurately record refrigerator and morgue cooler temperatures daily. Will notify supervisor if temperature falls out of established ranges. Will enter specimens into the laboratory computer with no errors.

Data entry experience and ability to use hospital LIS. Medical terminology a plus.
