Job description

Job introduction

It’s an exciting time to be part of BBC News as we grow in North America. Our independent, impartial and unrivalled global journalism has made us one of the most trusted news brands in the US, where we reach tens of millions of people each week across digital, TV and radio.

We are recruiting a reporter to work on live news coverage for our website (BBC.com / news) and app, based in our Washington DC bureau.

Main responsibilities

You will be part of a team reporting and writing daily, breaking news live blogs on the biggest stories in North America, from US politics and high-profile criminal trials to mega-storms and the Met Gala.

Our live reporting pages use text, pictures, videos and streams to provide fast, immersive and insightful coverage. You will work under two senior live blog editors based in the US but collaborate closely with Live team colleagues in London on the biggest global stories. You will be a self-starter who loves the thrill of breaking news, can write fast and engaging copy and is excited to experiment with the tone, pace and format of live coverage. You will also be expected to write standalone news stories when required.

Our North American digital operation covers US and Canadian news for domestic and global audiences. It is staffed 7 days a week. In this role, you will be expected to work both early and late shifts, including some weekends, and will be based in our Washington DC office.

Finally, BBC News is committed to creating a more diverse and inclusive organisation. We expect you to help cultivate that.

Are you the right candidate?

  • A proven ability to jump on major breaking news stories and turn out quick, accurate copy based on a range of sources including the BBC’s own reporting
  • An awareness of the distinctive nature of live coverage and an interest in developing new formats and creative approaches
  • Experience of live news blogging or a proven aptitude for dynamic, mobile-first reporting formats
  • An understanding of how to write in an accessible and clear way for a North American and global readership
  • A track record of covering the national or international news agenda, and generating daily coverage ideas and angles
  • The knowledge and flexibility to cover a broad range of stories, while meeting the BBC’s standards for accuracy and impartiality
  • Ability to cope with pressure, communicate clearly, juggle multiple tasks and work collaboratively in a fast-paced newsroom
  • Familiarity with using social media, search and audience data to improve storytelling and broaden audience reach
