The purpose of this class within the organization is to ensure that the scope of work is performed to the Florida building code by performing regular inspections. This class works independently, under limited supervision, reporting major activities through periodic meetings.The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
- Performs structural inspections and indicates corrective actions needed for compliance with approved plan details, specifications, or building codes.
- Performs roof inspections to ensure all materials and work are compliant with the current building codes.
- Inspects material installations for code compliance.
- Inspects residential and commercial structural components.
- Provides customer service.
- Assists with code-related issues.
- Corresponds with the contractor concerning issues with inspections.
- Communicates with contractors and homeowners to schedule inspection times and job-site meetings (as required).
- Prepares a daily route sheet of the requested inspection sites.
- Maintains a record of inspections by inputting the data of the inspection history.
- Performs related work as assigned.
- Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma / GED and four years of work experience in general construction, inspection, or plans review corresponding to the certification category (Structural) per Chapter 468.609, Florida Statutes requirements.
- Must possess provisional structural certification as an inspector issued by the State of Florida through the Florida Building Code Administrators and Inspectors Board within 90 days of the hire date.
- Standard certification must be obtained before the expiration of the provisional license.
- Possession of a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record is required. The salary offered will be based on possession of certification area(s). Salary is higher for multiple area certification holders such as electrical plus plumbing, structural, mechanical, roofing, one-family, and two-family dwelling.
- Ability to be flexible in work schedule in order to be available anytime for code problems that may arise from contractors or homeowners.
- Ability to understand and perform advanced mathematical calculations, i.e., graphs, geometric, and algebraic principles.
- Ability to walk and climb stairs and ladders as necessary to inspect building sites.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with inspectors, engineers, builders, homeowners, and the general public.
- Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in written form.
- The work days and hours for this position are Monday - Friday from 7 : 30 a.m. to 4 : 00 p.m. with the ability to work a flexible schedule anytime when code problems arise from contractors and / or homeowners.
