General Summary of Position Evaluates drugs prescribed by physicians for appropriateness of dose, therapeutic efficacy, allergy, drug interaction, and contraindications. Maintains accurate and complete documentation of all medicine-use-related activities to ensure appropriate distribution of medications. All areas of responsibility are subject to review by a licensed pharmacist.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Under direct supervision, contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
Assists in preparing required reports by compiling information.
Assists in troubleshooting and maintenance of automated drug distribution system. Serves as a resource to nursing and pharmacy technicians regarding the use and control of drugs in the automated system.
Assists pharmacist with filling orders and IV preparation and delivery.
Checks stock on a regular basis to ensure that stock is maintained in accordance with FDA requirements.
Participates in the training of pharmacy technicians and other nonprofessional personnel to assist in the drug distribution process and ensure timely delivery of medications.
Under direct supervision, advises patients, family, and health care professionals on use of various
medications including dosage, side effects, and composition.
Under direct supervision, compounds, labels, and packages medications and pharmaceuticals.
Under direct supervision, ensures secure storage of narcotics and other controlled substances.
Under direct supervision, prepares clear and concise clinical briefs for use by nurses, medical staff, and pharmacy.
Upon demonstration of competency in research and appropriate patient care, consults with and advises medical staff personnel regarding utilization of drugs and pharmaceuticals.
Upon demonstration of competency in research and appropriate patient care, uses principles of patient-centered care, works with unit-based staff and medical staff concerning prescriptions, orders, drug and pharmaceutical detailing, errors, adverse drug reactions, and complaints.
Upon demonstration of competency to preceptor, monitors drug therapy for appropriateness based on individual patient parameters and suggests alternate drug dosage and / or drug therapy when appropriate.
Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts.
Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
Pharm.D. student actively enrolled in a program from an ACPE accredited school of pharmacy. required
Experience
Less than 1 year 6 months experience in a hospital setting required
Licenses and Certifications
Certified by a national pharmacy technician certification program required and
Registered Pharmacy Technician in the State of Maryland required or
has been granted required or
is eligible for, a pharmacy student exemption from pharmacy technician registration by the State of MD required and
PharmD student actively in a program from an ACPE accredited school of pharmacy. required
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Verbal and written communication skills.
Basic computer skills preferred.
