Description
NATURE OF WORK
This is an internship opportunity with the City of Sunrise in support of our sustainability initiatives. All candidates will be considered. An academic background and/or professional experience in urban planning, environmental science or policy, engineering, architecture, communications and/or public policy or administration is preferred. Candidates should have a keen interest in the role of local government in creating sustainable communities and a commitment to public engagement.
This is a professional internship working with the Sustainability Officer, whose office is within the Utilities Department. Our sustainability work is cross-cutting, so there will be opportunity to interact with many other municipal departments. The work primarily deals with municipal planning functions, and will include carrying out research and the development of strategies to enhance the sustainability of municipal operations, projects and programs. In addition, the intern position includes the opportunity to further develop and implement strategies to engage our residents, schools and businesses.
HOURS : Up to 26 hours per week
(3 to 6 months to be determined)
Internship Compensations:
- Paid Internship - $15 per hour
- Undergraduate or Graduate Student Internship - for course credit (unpaid)
- Volunteer positions available as well (unpaid)
Examples of Duties
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS- Conduct research, develop proposals and implement measures and activities related to the following:
- Sustainability Policy & Action Planning: This may include conducting research and working collaboratively to develop policy, protocols and program recommendations. Possible topic areas include but are not limited to green building, landscaping, and capital projects.
- Community Engagement: This scope includes engaging our community in resource conservation and stewardship activities (such as Florida friendly Landscaping and butterfly gardening), and may include the development of materials and interaction with the public at forums and events. The intern may attend Sustainability Advisory Board meetings and other community events, as necessary.
- The Intern shall perform all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies and procedures and work in a safe manner and report unsafe activity and conditions.
Requirements
EDUCATION
- Must be enrolled full or part time at an accredited University/College at the graduate level.
- To qualify for a volunteer position internship placement, candidate ideally is a recent graduate or considering pursuing relevant education.

EXPERIENCE
- Background in public administration, urban planning, environmental science, engineering, energy policy, public policy, or a related field is preferred.
- Experience in use of computers and good communications (verbal and writing) skills are necessary.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Physical:
Light physical effort in sedentary to light work, which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials up to twenty pounds. Descending and climbing stairways and extended periods of standing observation may be required during field activities.
Work Environment:
Work is performed primarily in a standard office environment. Tasks are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
Sensory:
The ability to perceive and differentiate visual cues or signals. Tasks require the ability to communicate orally and in writing

- Ability to perform research and prepare pertinent reports.
- Fundamental knowledge of water and wastewater operations is desirable.
- Experience in use of computers and good communication skills are desirable.

- Ability to communicate effectively and persuasively, both verbally and in writing to individuals as well as groups.
