Pay Range Information :

Chapman University is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this position. This range takes into account a variety of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. Salary offers are determined based on the final candidate’s qualifications and experience, as well as internal equity and other internal factors. Job Description Summary :

The Chapman Costume Studio works closely with the Departments of Theatre, Dance, and Opera within the College of Performing Arts to produce quality costumes in a safe and timely manner. The Chapman Costume Studio often works on multiple, overlapping productions at once so the ability to multitask is crucial. The Costume Studio Assistant Manager operates under the general supervision of the CoPA Costume Studio Manager. This position operates with independent judgment and decision making on daily operations.

The Costume Studio Assistant Manager, as directed by the Costume Studio Manager : Supervises the Contracted Costume Studio Technician, student employees, student designers, practicum students, and students working on class projects in the Costume Studio and performance spaces. Ensures proper scheduling and communication, inside and outside the Costume Studio, to support the Costume Studio Manager. When the Costume Studio Manager is otherwise engaged, this position maintains the supervision and safety of the students working in the space. Supports show specific management, serving as liaison to designers on assigned productions. This position has varying responsibilities in facilitating costume production including, but not limited to; scheduling and supervising fittings, organizational paperwork, stitching, dyeing, quick-rigging, millinery, and crafts. Manages backstage wardrobe operations including, but not limited to; venue logistics, developing a wardrobe crew plan, coordinating quick changes, training wardrobe crews, and facilitating costume maintenance.

The projected start date for this position will be 1 / 2 / 25.

Responsibilities :

Costume Studio Management

  • Assists Costume Studio Manager in establishing policy and protocol to enhance efficient production of costumes.
  • Establishes and maintains comprehensive calendar overview to support the Costume Studio Manager in creating a labor plan, incorporating all overlapping CoPA productions.
  • Increases efficiency of Costume Studio labor by creating charts and documents to effectively communicate deadlines and expectations.
  • Creates instructional guides to promote a safe and supportive educational environment.
  • Supports the Costume Studio by creating and managing the schedule for costume fittings and craft room.
  • Supervises and provides guidance to staff and student employees as directed by the Costume Studio Manager.
  • Communicates schedules and costume specific production expectations within and outside of the Costume Studio as directed.
  • Identifies problems / issues regarding workflow and develops potential solutions to review / discuss with the Costume Studio Manager.
  • Provides additional support for Costume Studio Manager, as needed.

Show Specific Management

  • Facilitates the production of costumes for authorized CoPA productions as directed by the Costume Studio Manager.
  • Schedules measurement appointments and oversees measurement database.
  • Creates, manages and communicates costume fitting schedule as directed.
  • Reads and analyzes scripts for assigned productions.
  • Supports Costume Studio Manager by acting as liaison on assigned shows, ensuring clear communication between the designer, production team, and Costume Studio.
  • When acting as the liason, sets up racks and follows up on alteration notes from scheduled fittings on assigned productions.
  • Supports designers in the fitting process on productions as directed, and monitors progress on alteration and craft needs.
  • Oversees costume painting, dying distressing and craftwork when needed.
  • Backstage Wardrobe Management

  • Provides a safe and supportive backstage environment, that promotes a collaborative educational experience for student wardrobe crews.
  • Supports collaborative effort between technical disciplines by coordinating backstage spacing issues with scenic, providing clarity between overlapping costume / prop items, and coordinating wardrobe specific rehearsal needs with stage management.
  • Coordinates quick changes between costume designer and hair / makeup team to provide clear detailed instructions for both student performers and student crews.
  • Develops wardrobe crew plan based on show specific documentation to incorporate all quick changes and costume maintenance.
  • Trains student wardrobe crews in costume maintenance and safety according to venue and departmental protocols.
  • Supports wardrobe crew in problem solving all costume related issues, attends to any repairs or alterations on assigned productions.
  • Facilitates costume maintenance during and after productions in the Costume Studio and at the venue.
  • Organizes logistics of transporting costume and show-related items between Costume Studio and production venues.
  • Required Qualifications :

  • Undergraduate degree in Technical Theatre or a related field preferred, or an equivalent combination of work experience, training and / or education may be considered.
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated experience in costume technology; hand stitching, machine sewing techniques, basic craft and millinery skills.
  • Experience with tools and equipment for professional, educational, and theatrical productions.
  • Basic knowledge of costume and fashion history.
  • Basic knowledge of fabrics types and their uses for stage.
  • Ability to perform basic calculations for fabric measurements and costume fittings.
  • Ability to operate with skill a variety of sewing machines including but not limited to; single needle industrial; industrial zig-zag; overlock, serger; domestic straight and zig-zag machines.
  • Good organization skills.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks when faced with interruptions, distraction and fluctuating workloads and to carry out duties in a timely manner.
  • Ability to effectively communication both orally and in writing.
  • Desired Qualifications :

  • Strong analytical and organizational skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to interact with diverse groups of individuals at all organizational levels, both inside and outside of the university.
  • Undergraduate degree in Costume Technology or closely related field.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office software (e.g. Excel, Word), and ability to work with an online scheduling system.
  • Basic pattern drafting skills.
