Reports to : Director of Special Education, Nursing Chair and Building Principal
Purpose
The School Nurse provides direct healthcare to students and staff for illness / injury at school. Utilizes the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care for students with chronic health conditions. Assist Nursing Chair in implementing a comprehensive school health services program, thus advancing the health, well-being, and academic achievement of all students
Main Job Tasks and Responsibilities
- Provides screening and referral for health conditions, including vision, hearing and others
- Promotes a healthy school environment. Monitors immunizations and communicable diseases per state requirements. Assesses physical environment for safety
- Promotes health through teaching, programming, and consultation with individuals or groups
- Serves as a leader for health policies and programs through mentoring and positive role modeling
- Serves as liaison between school personnel, families, community, and health care providers. Represents the school health department for IEP and 504 teams
- Communicates and collaborates with other healthcare professionals, the school staff, the student, and the family for optimal health and learning while maintaining student confidentiality
- Develops nursing care plans in collaboration with a licensed healthcare provider
- Provides annual competency training for non-nursing personnel, as directed
- Plays an integral role in Emergency Response Planning
- Complete Medicaid billing as required
