Overview:
The Operating Room RN Circulator provides nursing care to surgical patients and serves as the patient’s advocate throughout the perioperative process. This role responds to patient needs by collaborating closely with the surgeon and anesthesia provider, ensuring safe, efficient, and compassionate care.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Support of Organizational Standards
- Supports the philosophy, goals, and objectives of the organization.
- Performs duties according to approved policies and procedures.
- Functions as an integral member of the perioperative team.
- Considers and protects patient rights at all times.
Quality Improvement & Safety
- Participates in the Quality Improvement Program, including data collection and performance activities.
- Supports risk‑management initiatives and promotes patient and staff safety.
- Evaluates processes, suggestions, and feedback to identify opportunities for improvement.
- Reports hazards, violations, and noncompliance per facility policy.
- Responds effectively and professionally during emergency situations.
Communication & Collaboration
- Communicates respectfully and professionally with patients, families, physicians, management, and coworkers.
- Uses interpreter services when needed.
- Ensures patient information is relayed accurately to appropriate departments and team members.
Professional Growth & Education
- Maintains professional competence through ongoing education and participation in committees, conferences, and quality activities.

- Participates in meetings, in‑services, and required training sessions.

Case Management & Resource Coordination
- Supervises and directs patient care within a single operating room.
- Organizes nursing activities and delegates tasks appropriately.
- Uses supplies economically and supports efficient room turnover.
- Assists with inventory of supplies, equipment, and medications.
Preoperative Admission to the Operating Room
- Transports patients according to policy, safety requirements, and patient needs.
- Verifies patient identity and correct surgical procedure and communicates findings to the surgical team.
- Reviews the patient’s medical record and collaborates to plan individualized care.
- Ensures patient privacy, comfort, and understanding of intraoperative routines.
Circulating Nurse Responsibilities
- Prepares the operating room based on procedure and patient needs.
- Ensures equipment, instruments, and supplies are functional and available.
- Anticipates the needs of the surgical team and assists anesthesia during induction and emergence.
- Assists with safe patient positioning and operative site preparation.
- Maintains aseptic technique and participates in surgical time‑out and site verification.
- Monitors environmental parameters to ensure patient comfort and safety.
- Documents care accurately and maintains continuity among perioperative team members.
Timely Clinical Response & Documentation
- Interprets and follows verbal orders accurately.
- Completes documentation according to facility policy and regulatory standards.
- Communicates patient status promptly to physicians and other caregivers.
Requirements
Education and Experience
- Associate’s Degree in Nursing or equivalent from an accredited program.
- Six months to one year of OR or related nursing experience preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licensure and Certifications
- Active Registered Nurse license in Virginia.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required.
Computer Skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Windows and electronic medical record systems.
Physical Requirements
- Must regularly lift or move up to 50 lbs; occasionally up to 100 lbs.
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, and use of hands.
Work Environment
- Surgical center environment with moderate noise levels.
- May involve exposure to bloodborne pathogens, chemical hazards, and occasional radiation, in accordance with safety protocols.
