General Statement of Duties :
The Advanced Practice Provider Surgical First Assistant provides direct surgical first assist support andassesses patients using skills and knowledge to identify orthopedic related problems. This position performs preoperativeand postoperative duties to facilitate patient care.
Essential Duties :
- Directly first assists the Surgeon. Time-outs with surgical draping, operative exposure openings, procedure exposure and fixation. Support closure of patient wound or wounds, dressing wound sites. Assists with patient positioning and surgical skin prepping.
- Assists operating room staff, including the Registered Nurse and Anesthesia, with obtaining supplies, equipment, and instruments needed for surgery. Checks Physician preference cards. Assists the Anesthesia providers with IVs and intubation as needed.
- Provides patient treatment, including but not limited to : applying or removing casts or splints, would care and repair, joint injections and aspiration, administration of local anesthetic and digital blocks, joint and fracture reduction, and application of braces, splints, and other DME or post-surgical devices.
- Alleviates patient’s fears prior to surgical procedures. Provides patient and family instruction on the proper use and care of braces, splints, and other DME or post-surgical products. Helps to counsel individuals and families about their health-related issues. Communicates individualized teaching plans to patients based on their needs.
- Moves the patient from the surgical table to the patient cart. Assists with transportation of patient to the recovery room.
- Decontamination of operating room turn-overs. Turn overs the operating room and assists with cleaning the tables, floor, trash, and linen with staff as needed.
- Ability to be on call as needed
