Under the direction and supervision of a surgeon, the Surgical Assistant performs pre-operative, intraoperative and postoperative technical functions to assist the surgeon in carrying out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. Responsibilities include but are not limited to utilizing the appropriate techniques for positioning & preparing the patient for surgery, providing visualization of the operative site, assisting with hemostasis, volume replacement or auto transfusion as well as assisting with the closure of body planes. Reports to the department leadership.
- ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provides age appropriate preoperative assessment and postoperative evaluation of care.
- Assists with the sterilization and preparation of equipment and supplies.
- Follows all hospital policies related surgical procedures and the disposal of contaminated items.
- Participates in the design, coordination, education, evaluation and / or implementation of programs related to patient care programs.
- Maintains proficiency in technical and professional skills.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- LICENSES AND / OR CERTIFICATIONS
- MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Two to three years of surgical assistant experience preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology and operative techniques.
- CPR Training required and / or must be obtained within 45 days of hire.

- PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Applies the appropriate wound dressings and provides assistance in securing drainage systems to tissue.
Certification as a Surgical Assistant required.
Graduate of an accredited surgical assisting program.
Surgical areas work environment with frequent exposure to unpleasant odors from disinfectant solutions / chemicals. Possible exposure to infectious agents when handling instruments or hazardous materials. Potential for personal harm or injury is reduced when proper safety and health precautions are followed. Exposure to communicable diseases and moderately adverse working conditions due to the need to perform certain patient care activities can be expected.
