Job Summary

Are you an experienced IT professional that enjoys assisting with the development, implementation, and escalation support critical to the success of an organization? If this is you, we invite you to apply to join us as an IT System Engineer I. This is a Regular, Full-time (1.0 FTE) position within the Administrative Services Division.

Some of what you'll do :

  • Help to evaluates both the technical and non-technical aspects of the technology environment and proposes alternative infrastructure or systems which are technically feasible, efficient and economical.
  • Provide infrastructure systems and various software licenses and applications to integrate, secure, stabilize, support and grow the technological architecture.
  • Follow the direction of senior personnel in the design and implementation of disaster recovery strategies, hardware and software and security roadmaps.
  • Assist in the design and implementation of enterprise-wide system policies, procedures and security to comply with regulatory compliance.
  • Compile and analyze usage and capacity metrics for strategic planning, researching solutions, and make recommendations affecting the expansion of the department's technology environment.
  • Help to provide advanced and escalated support and troubleshooting for technology systems, services and infrastructure.
  • Conduct systems and infrastructure diagnostics, stabilizes, troubleshoots, and resolves issues.
  • Assist in providing direction for troubleshooting efforts, helps to develops paths for resolution options and builds documents for department and team to utilize for knowledge transfer and skill building.
  • Contribute to development and recommendations to repair, rebuild or replace technology infrastructure to ensure stable and supportable environment in support of business needs.
  • Assist the Senior personnel in providing technical expertise, deployments and project builds on all components of the technology environment.
  • Contribute to advance system management, administration and guidance of systems, services, infrastructure and to support the current and future technologies.
  • Work to provide capacity management, documentation, testing, training and mentoring in utilization of technology systems and services to ensure technology environment is scalable and supportable.
  • Provide vendor management, technology procurements, coordination and utilization in delivery and support of solutions to meet business requirements.
  • Assist in research and analysis to identify best possible technology infrastructure solutions to be acquired to meet business goals and projects.

  • Who should apply

    Bachelors degree in computer engineering or computer science; And, four years of experience with network, servers, technology appliances, services and Windows environment; Or the equivalent education and experience.

    Required

  • Possession of current industry related certifications relevant to information technology. (Ex. MCSE, MCP, CNA, CISSP, etc.)
  • Possession of valid Washington State Driver's License and acceptable driver's abstract. Ability to successfully pass a background investigation.

  • Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

    Work Setting :

  • Work is performed almost exclusively indoors in an office environment. Exposure to hazards is limited to those commonly found in government office environments.
  • Your office will be set up to provide personal safety, including social distancing, screening, sanitation, disinfection, and masks.
  • Tools and Equipment :

  • Duties require the use of standard office furniture and equipment (e.g. desk, filing cabinet, computer, printer, telephone, fax machine, copy machine, etc).
  • Physical Demands :

  • Extensive amount of time is spent using a computer. Eye strain and occasional soreness of wrists and fingers may occur.
  • Travel :

  • Some travel is required, typically local or regional, to meet with clients, conduct business, or attend or provide training.
  • When public health responds to an emergency, you may be assigned duties outside of your regular job description. This may involve responding at any time, including nights and weekends, with possible deployment to locations other than the department.

    Salary : Salary ranges are listed on the job announcement and are based on the unique skills, education, and experience for the position. Salary offers are typically made at the starting pay step and are reviewed annually. You will get an annual cost-of-living adjustment that increases the salary range as well as an annual step increase on your anniveristy date. All salary offers are subject to administrative approval.

    Medical, Vision, and Dental Insurance : The Department pays a significant portion of these premiums for employees, their spouse or domestic partner, and dependent children, with an FTE of .80 or greater. Employees with an FTE between .50 and .80 pay a pro-rated portion of their premiums. Medical, vision and dental coverage begins the first day of the month following date of hire.

    Life Insurance : The Department provides a term Life Insurance policy equal to the employee's annual salary, up to a maximum of $50,000.

  • Affordable voluntary, spouse, and dependent life insurance is also available.
  • Long Term Disability Insurance (LTD) : The Department provides a base LTD policy which provides 40% income replacement for participants who are unable to work due to illness or injury for greater than 180 days. Buy-Up LTD is available at group rates and provides 60% income replacement to participants who are unable to work due to illness or injury for greater than 90 days.

    Retirement : Eligible employees participate in the Tacoma Employees' Retirement System (TERS). TERS is a defined retirement benefit plan funded by both the employee and the Department. We also have a 457 Deferred Compensation retirement program available which allows individuals to set aside a portion of their income on a tax deferred basis.
