The JSB (Junction of Statistics and Biology) Lab at Fred Hutch, led by Professor Jingyi Jessica Li, operates at the intersection of statistics and biology to drive cutting-edge biomedical research. The JSB Lab focuses on developing statistical and computational methods motivated by important questions in biomedical sciences and abundant information in big genomic and health related data. On the statistical methodology side, our example interests include association measures, high-dimensional variable selection, classification metrics, and complex inference problems post variable section or empowered by prediction. On the biomedical application side, our example interests include transcriptomics, comparative genomics, and information flow in the central dogma. The JSB Lab is seeking a Statistical Programmer I to supports the team's mission of developing robust computational tools that enable biological discoveries from large-scale omics data and software package maintenance needs across the entire program's faculty. This role maintains and enhances software infrastructure, develops interactive web-based interfaces, and contributes to scientific research through computational innovation. Responsibilities
- Maintain and update the existing codebases for published computational methods (R or Python packages), ensuring long-term compatibility and usability.
- Manage and update websites, including content and backend maintenance.
- Develop web-based user interfaces for Python- and R-based computational tools.
- Download, manage, and preprocess large datasets.
- Optimize the existing parallel computing framework and implement GPU acceleration where applicable.
- Collaborate with team members to establish and implement standardized formats for documentation and tutorial materials.
- Other duties as assigned. Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
- Bachelor's degree with at least one year of professional experience in Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Data Science, Informatics, Mathematics, Statistics, Epidemiology, Public Health or a related field OR Master's degree in these fields.
- At least one project experience (or full-time academic / professional experience) in Python or R
- Proficiency with basic Linux system operations
- Experience in processing large-scale datasets OR proven ability to rapidly learn new tools and concepts PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :
- Proficiency in HTML and JavaScript, with hands-on experience in at least one front-end framework (e.g., React) and one back-end framework (e.g., Flask)
- Experience with statistical modeling and machine learning techniques
- Commitment to clean coding practices and thorough, user-friendly documentation The hourly pay range for this position is from $36.13 to $54.17 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center offers employees a comprehensive benefits package designed to enhance health, well-being, and financial security.
