Job Description

POSITION : Teaching Artist (Visual Arts)

FLSA STATUS : Part-time / Seasonal / Non-exempt

SALARY RANGE : $165 per workshop, $70 per meeting

TIMEFRAME : This is a pilot project and contact sessions per class may be variable. We are aiming to have a minimum of 3-4 classroom periods per class per project that will be scheduled sometime between March – May 2025.

The Tenement Museum is currently seeking teaching artists who work in visual arts disciplines to co-develop and facilitate school-based workshops inspired by the content from the Tenement Museum’s tour Union of Hope : 1869. We encourage applicants of all backgrounds to submit their application for our review.

About the Museum :

Founded in 1988, the Tenement Museum welcomes visitors into the homes of immigrant, migrant, and refugee families to inspire connections between past and present and to promote an inclusive and expansive American society. We tell the stories of working-class tenement residents who moved to New York City from other countries and other parts of the country to live on the Lower East Side. Their work helped build the city and nation, and their stories help us understand our history.

We interpret the stories of European immigrants of the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, the stories of more recent immigrants from China and migrants from Puerto Rico, and we share African American and Black history and experiences in Lower Manhattan. The museum is housed in two historic buildings located on Orchard Street in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Guided by an Educator, visitors can hear the stories of the former tenants of Orchard Street and surrounding area, explore the neighborhood through walking tours, or visit from afar on our virtual programs.

About Union of Hope : 1869 :

In December 2023, the Tenement Museum launched a new exhibit, A Union of Hope : 1869, which tells the story of Joseph and Rachel Moore, a Black family living in the NYC tenements in the 1860s and 1870s, a pivotal era for our nation and our city. One of the central primary sources we share in the exhibit is an April 1870 article from the Commercial Advertiser that describes the celebration of the passage of the 15th Amendment in the primarily Black and Irish Eighth Ward neighborhood, where Joseph and Rachel Moore lived. In this article, the author describes flags that hung from tenement windows decorated with mottos expressing the collective joy and hopes of the neighborhood’s Black residents, who were finally getting the right to vote following decades of struggle. These mottos included “Proclaim liberty throughout the land, to all the inhabitants thereof;” “Impartial suffrage to all without distinction of race and color;” and “Out of Egypt have I brought my children.”

Position Description :

The Tenement Museum seeks enthusiastic, collaborative, and engaging Teaching Artists for Part-Time / Seasonal employment who are inspired by the connections that can be made between history, migration, and related contemporary issues through visual art. Teaching artists will work with the Education department to develop and facilitate a visual arts project with middle or high school students inspired by the historical celebrations with flags that occurred after the passage of the 15th amendment. You are a welcoming and inclusive facilitator who can be flexible and creative when working with diverse student groups with varying perspectives and abilities in classroom settings. You are looking for a position that is seasonal, contract work.

The facilitation fee for teaching artists is $165.00 per workshop and $70 / hour for curriculum and planning meetings. Project supplies and materials will be provided by the Tenement Museum.

As a Teaching Artist you will :

  • Observe Union of Hope (UoH) and read UoH tour materials
  • Collaborate with Education department staff to develop scope and sequence and lesson plans for the in-class visual arts project
  • Determine supply needs for project to be purchased and provide sourcing options
