The SDS, established in January 2020, was the first School of Data Science in the Carolinas. Currently, the School offers two Bachelor of Science degrees (Data Science and Sports Analytics), two Master of Science programs (Data Science and Business Analytics and Health Informatics and Analytics), and a PhD in Data Science. The SDS teaches and researches methods to apply statistics, AI, and other analytical techniques to develop data-driven solutions to real-world problems. These areas vary from the ethical application and use of data to business, healthcare, social sciences, transportation, engineering, and more. The school has grown quickly to more than 900 students, with half of them being graduate students, and is continuing to evolve with the needs of the students, university, and the community. Currently, the school has approximately 90 full-time, joint and affiliate faculty.The College of Computing and Informatics (CCI) (cci.charlotte.edu) at UNC Charlotte is one of the most comprehensive and innovative computing colleges in the country. With over 140 faculty and staff and 5,000 students, CCI graduates more than 1,300 Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Ph.D. students a year. Thus, the Job Responsibilities and Essential Functions for Non-Tenure Track Faculty should be interpreted in the context of the related departmental and collegiate teaching goals.

Teaching – Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, and grading student work.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities The qualified candidate is expected to focus on the broad area of sports analytics, including, but not limited to, evaluation of team performance, estimation of player contribution, in-game strategy, human performance, wearable technology, and/or data-driven decision making within sports. The primary role of this position includes teaching undergraduate courses in Sports Analytics and Data Science as assigned, mentoring student internships, independent studies, and scholarly projects, and participating in course/curriculum development and improvement.Scholarly Research, Creative and Other Professional Activities – faculty members are expected to engage in scholarly activities related to sports analytics education and continuously explore innovative technologies and pedagogical approaches to enhance student engagement and success.

Applicants must be committed to teaching undergraduate Sports Analytics program courses, including those involving computer programming, and be actively involved in mentoring student-driven scholarship. Minimum Experience/Education

UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned masters and/or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

Preferred Education, Skills and Experience Lecturer/Sr. Lecturer
Master’s degree in Statistics, Data Science, Kinesiology, or related discipline. Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the collegiate level, and commitment to student success.

Teaching Assistant Professor:
Ph.D. degree in Statistics, Data Science, Kinesiology, or related discipline. Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the collegiate level, and commitment to student success. Evidence of leadership in instruction and instructional innovation.
Candidates who have completed all requirements except the dissertation will be considered with proof of a defense date by June 30, 2026.

Evidence of a record of collaboration within the sports analytics industry is desirable for both.
