Job description

As a technical designer, you will help students with fabric preparation, pattern layout and marking, and garment assembly and pressing while demonstrating industrial sewing, hand sewing, and fine finishing techniques. You will assist students with the creation of spec sheets and garment execution plans, while also inspiring innovative solutions in garment construction. Your responsibilities include ensuring adherence to professional standards for student work, consistency in fit and aesthetics based on individual design intent, and maintenance of library blocks, patterns, and muslins to help students speed up production. You will also develop new patterns and muslins. Additionally, you will measure samples, compare construction and overall garment completion, and assist with presenting and conducting live model fittings to ensure all student projects are completed with the highest quality according to SCAD standards and values.

In this role, you will communicate with students about all necessary corrections, technical information, recommended materials, garment specifications, and relevant finishing techniques. You will collaborate with fashion students, professors, and department chairs to analyze designs, implement design changes, and complete projects on time. Responsibilities include the evaluation of prototypes, inspections of finished products, and facilitation of workshops on using Juki industrial sewing equipment, specialty machines, and fabric manipulation techniques. Additionally, you will teach students how to operate sewing machines, sergers, overlockers, fusing machines, and other related equipment. You will also operate fabric printers (e.g., uploading images via RIP Master software, printing, steaming, profiling, and maintaining printers) and digital embroidery machines.

In this position, you will maintain a professional environment in fashion studio areas, offer quarterly extra help sessions, and conduct at least 20 SCADextraTech workshops. You will create an online database of supplementary materials and establish quality standards for the team and office procedures. Responsibilities include improving record-keeping, identifying supply needs, coordinating with vendors, and managing inventory. You will perform maintenance checks, oversee studio space to ensure resources are accessible, and collaborate with the awards office to assist students with competition submissions. Additionally, you'll maintain communication with students, staff, and vendors.

The ideal candidate has excellent time management, organizational, and communication skills, with a strong attention to detail. The ideal candidate is also experienced in leading fit evaluations to make necessary adjustments and can thrive in fast-paced environments. The candidate has a professional interest in the clothing industry and demonstrates a strong work ethic with high standards of performance. Additionally, they have a solid understanding of all aspects of technical design, including garment quality improvements, and are knowledgeable about commercial fit and pattern standards, such as corrections, grading, construction methods, sewing techniques, and sketching.

The candidate should be able to modify patterns, analyze garment construction and workmanship, manipulate existing patterns, and communicate adjustments to fashion students, professors, and the fashion department to reflect changes. They also can quickly identify flaws and make on-the-spot design adjustments, as well as complete projects independently. They are comfortable taking direction.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree in fashion design or a closely related program
  • Proven technical design and apparel manufacturing skills
  • Experience operating industrial sewing machines, sergers, specialty sewing machines, digital printing equipment, and industrial fabric cutters
  • Knowledge of how products are sourced and developed
  • Proficient in PC operation, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, and Gerber AccuMark or other pattern design software

Preferred qualifications:

  • At least five years of industry experience within technical design and apparel manufacturing
  • Experience with CLO or other pattern software design
  • Proficient with Avancé embroidery machines, Mutoh fabric digital printers, and FreeJet sublimation printers

Travel required:

  • Less than 10%
