Job Description
Hybrid : This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Concord, NC three times per week, at minimum.
The Role
The NASCAR Technical Lead ensures GM’s NASCAR race cars are legal, fast, and reliable by leading the end-to-end technical strategy across simulation platforms, performance engineering, and regulatory compliance. This role blends high-level management with deep technical expertise in vehicle dynamics, simulation, and data analysis. The Technical Lead will set requirements, drive tool development, manage inspection / compliance interfaces, and collaborate closely with competition leadership, aerodynamics, and powertrain groups to deliver peak performance within NASCAR regulations.
What You’ll Do
Simulation Ownership : Lead all simulation and tools development for GM NASCAR programs (Cup, Oreilly’s, and Craftsman Truck Series).
Driving Simulator Program : Optimize and refine the Driver-in-the-Loop (DiL) simulator for realism, correlation, and actionable race engineering output.
Pit Road Modeling : Further develop and implement pit road simulation capabilities (stops, strategies, timing, safety / risk modeling).
Data Infrastructure : Define and manage data-sharing standards and pipelines for key partners and satellite teams; ensure security, access control, and versioning.
Work Prioritization : Own prioritization of workloads within GM Motorsports Engineering to support all NASCAR initiatives, balancing near-term race needs with longer-term platform development.
Platform Evolution : Serve as the technical lead for future evolutions of simulation platforms (models, solvers, toolchains, integration across aero, powertrain, vehicle dynamics).
Engineering Process : Set requirements; evaluate designs; lead analysis, development, validation, and implementation—exercising independent judgment and creativity.
Technical Direction : Guide engineering direction across aerodynamics, powertrain, chassis, tires, and systems integration; support race engineering with advanced analysis.
Funneling Function : Provide a unified intake and triage path for customer inputs / criteria (teams, drivers, leadership) to ensure cohesive engineering direction.
Trade Studies & Decisions : Identify technical issues and utilize structured trade-study approaches to recommend solutions that best meet performance, reliability, and customer needs.
Status & Decisions : Communicate program engineering status and drive timely, data-informed decisions across stakeholders.
Leadership & Cross-Functional
People Leadership : Lead and develop a team of simulation and performance engineers; set goals, coach talent, and manage resources / budgets.
Roadblock Removal : Proactively remove cross-functional impediments; act as proxy for program activities when needed.
Architecture Excellence : Execute customer-centered engineering processes to integrate driver feedback and performance requirements with vehicle architecture and tools.
Culture & Values : Demonstrate passion, initiative, and willingness to work outside defined roles for the good of the team; uphold GM Behaviors and Core Values.
What You’ll Need (Required Qualifications)
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or related technical field.
10+ years of motorsports engineering experience, in NASCAR at a leadership level.
Extensive motorsports experience, particularly in vehicle dynamics, simulation, or race engineering.
Proven leadership and people management skills; experience leading technical teams and managing budgets / resources.
Deep understanding of NASCAR regulations and operational procedures, including technical inspection processes.
Demonstrated ability to solve complex, novel problems with creative, data-driven solutions; strong communication and collaboration skills.
Domestic and International travel is required to support NASCAR events and partner engagements.
What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
Hands-on experience with simulation platforms (e.g., DiL simulators, lap-time simulation, MBS, CFD integration) and motorsports data systems.
Familiarity with compliance strategies, garage operations, and rule interpretation in professional motorsports.
Experience integrating aero / powertrain / chassis models and building robust data pipelines for multi-team collaboration.
