Job description

Job Description Summary

The purpose of this job is to train firefighters and other city employees regarding current best practices in fire and emergency medical services. Essential Duties and Responsibilities - The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description

  • Reviews, develops, and updates approved lesson plans.
  • Assists other instructors with the building and development of approved lesson plans.
  • Conducts and documents remedial training with firefighters as needed.
  • Monitors and evaluates instructors to ensure competence in teaching ability and content of training.
  • Serves as a point-of-contact for the fire academy.
  • Inputs and maintains data.
  • Coordinates trainings for new recruits. Reviews recruit progress reports and keeps the chain of command apprised of progress.
  • Provides instruction for in-service training programs.
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • No supervisory authority. Work does require providing guidance and training to others.

  • Education and Experience - An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered Education and Experience :

  • Associate Degree in Fire Science or related field or equivalent training as a certified instructor. Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
  • 1 to 3 years experience in fire / emergency medical services or related field.
  • Licenses or Certifications :

  • Valid driver’s license.
  • CPR certification
  • EMT license.
  • Obtain Missouri Division of Fire Safety Fire Service Instructor I and II, Live Fire Trainer certification, and Incident Safety Officer certifications within one year of hire.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities which may be representative, but not all-inclusive of those commonly associated with this position

  • Fire suppression and first responder best practices.
  • Emergency and non-emergency safety standards and precautions pertaining to the use and operation of fire equipment and fire suppression and first responder activities.
  • Effective teaching and learning techniques.
  • Principles of classroom instruction, professional development training, and curriculum design.
  • Basic business English usage, including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Common business software applications such as Microsoft Office.
  • Developing and delivering training programs.
  • Communicating verbally and in writing to meet the needs of the audience

  • Recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems.
  • Conduct research and determine best practices.
