Principal Responsibilities:

POSITION SUMMARY

Reports Directly To:Teen Camp Unit Head

This is a seven-week position, one week of orientation from June 29 - July 2 and six weeks of camp - July 6 - Aug. 14, 2026

Madatz Teen Travel Camp Counselor will supervise and care for campers in "loco parentis." Trip leaders must work well with co-leaders in a remote setting, away from the JCC.

The ability to foresee and prevent potential hazards and camper issues is crucial to leading a successful trip. Trip Leaders are responsible for preparing final logistics for each assigned trip and to ensure they have all of the equipment necessary to run a trip safely and successfully.

Facilitating a camper's experience to be positive and insightful is also crucial to this position. The successful candidate truly enjoys working with teens and desires to share their love for the outdoors and travel.

We send trips out to the local surrounding area as well as throughout Pennsylvania. Our trips include backpacking, hiking, camping, rafting, canoeing, kayaking, sailing, climbing, touring and service elements. Our primary youth demographics are ages 12 - 15.

Staff will be driving teens on a trip to Philadelphia for 4 days and a trip to Dorney Park in Allentown Pennsylvania for 3 days.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Ability to identify and mitigate risk to ensure positive and incident free experiences for participants.
  • Be an active member of camp giving your input in an appropriate manner, taking on delegated responsibilities and helping to maintain the physical, emotional, and mental health of campers in the program.
  • Complete and submit all required documentation including, but not limited to, daily logs, accident reports, vehicle logs, petty cash, and credit card expenditures etc. in a timely manner.
  • Help to execute all trips. safely This includes teaching campers the specific hard and soft skills needed for and during each trip, as well as processing the trip at the conclusion of the experience.
Minimum Qualifications:

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Preferably teen counselors should be 25 years of age or older by June 1st. Younger applicants will be considered based on previous experience, maturity, education and skills.
  • Possess a clean, valid U.S. driver's license for the length of the position. Your driving record must be approved prior to official acceptance.
  • Experience working with youth and teens ages 12-15 in an outdoor setting, including camping skills.
  • Able to hike in a variety of terrain types. Good physical health overall is a must.
  • Ability to work long hours, including evening and late-night programs while traveling.
  • Ability to be flexible to sudden changes in schedule, staff, and campers.
  • Present a strong, positive model for kids and fellow staff members.
  • Possess excellent communication and group facilitation skills.

Since its inception in 1927, the Jewish Community Center (JCC) of Binghamton, NY has grown to become an essential part of the Broome County community. As a full-service, non-profit organization, the JCC provides educational, cultural, recreational, and physical fitness programs to enhance the quality of life for all ages, from infants to senior citizens. The JCC's facility houses a natatorium with a 2250 sq. ft. pool, gymnasium, fitness center, men's and women's health clubs, steam, sauna, a fitness loft with spin bikes and Pilates reformers, auditorium, and more. Over 200 children are served daily at our award-winning Early Childhood Center. Our year-round educational childcare includes UPK, after-school program, summer camp, and youth sports offerings.

The JCC sit's atop of 8-acres of land featuring outdoor tennis/pickleball and basketball courts, pavilion, nature preserve, soccer field, and three age-appropriate playground facilities.
