Job Description

The Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry (ODAFF) is seeking a full time Urban & Community Partnership Coordinator in the Forestry Division. This position (PIN #04000159) is in state government, located in Oklahoma City, OK. The State of Oklahoma offers a comprehensive , including a generous benefit allowance to offset the cost of insurance premiums for employees and their eligible dependents.

The hourly pay for this position is up to $29.32 based on education and experience.

Position Description : Positions in this job family are professional foresters assigned responsibilities to develop, implement, or administer forestry conservation and management programs, wildland fire management, and projects in an assigned district, region, or statewide.

Typical Functions :

Promote volunteerism in communities developing local urban forestry programs. Explore opportunities to develop working relationships with other state and local government agencies and non-profit groups.

Assist in developing matching grant program guidelines, forms and procedures and publicizing the availability of grant funding.

Assist the Forestry Education Program Coordinator and help design programs to involve youth and volunteers in forestry projects.

Act as statewide coordinator for Arbor Day Foundation’s (ADF) Tree City USA and other ADF program review processes. This will involve working with regional field staff to engage stakeholders to achieve and maintain Tree City USA, Tree Campus Higher Education, Growth Awards and Tree Line USA status. Provide direct guidance to staff and applicants to help grow the number of recognized communities and organizations in Oklahoma.

Assist with Arbor Week and the Annual U&CF Conference.

Manage computer files to compile quarterly and annual accomplishment reports, and track progress of grant projects.

Work directly with all State Office staff and field personnel and provide training in areas when requested and where needed.

Assist as support staff for urban forestry activities and programs carried out by field offices.

Promotion of forestry programs and services and educational projects in partnership with state and federal agencies and non-profit organizations using effective demonstrations, exhibits, tours, meetings, mass media, personal contact and contributions to the urban forestry and education sections of the agency’s website.

Participate in meetings and conferences on all aspects of forestry; develop and conduct training sessions for employees, civic groups and concerned citizens; initiate or assist in the preparation of news articles and publications on forestry practices and programs.

Conduct forest inventory and risk assessments.

Become trained in Urban Forest Strike Team process, protocol and procedures for deployment to help communities prepare, respond and recover from catastrophic events.

Serve on Southern Group of State Forester's Urban and Community Forestry Committee.

Work closely with arborists to promote ANSI A300 Standards of pruning and planting.

Work closely with sawmills to promote Urban Wood Utilization and Full Circle Forestry.

Act as the local expert on Urban Forestry by performing media interviews and giving presentations at public events and functions.

Work closely with the Communications & Outreach Manager to promote urban forestry initiatives through social media and other outlets.

Manage the Oklahoma Champion Tree Program.

Serve as the project manager for competitive grant projects such as LSR, SUFR, CWG, and BIL funded projects. Lead and collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure the successful planning, execution, and evaluation of new and existing grant funded projects.

Level Description : This is the leadership level where employees are assigned responsibilities involving the planning, organization, and development of one or more specific programs related to forest resource conservation, management, and protection. In this role they will serve as a staff member in the Forestry Division with responsibility for developing all aspects of assigned programs and provide functional or direct supervision and training to lower level foresters and other personnel in conducting assigned programs and perform various administrative tasks as required, including budget preparation and administration, coordination with other federal and state agencies, forest industry, associations and other cooperators, overall program promotion and development, and program evaluation and strategic planning. Some positions may be assigned responsibility for specialized statewide forestry programs, such as supervising and / or performing work in forest water quality.

Education and Experience : Requirements at this level consist of a bachelor’s degree in forestry or a related natural resources degree, plus three years of professional forestry experience and one year of professional forestry experience in a supervisory capacity; or a Master’s degree in Forestry plus two years of professional forestry experience and one year of professional forestry experience in a supervisory capacity; or a Doctoral degree in Forestry plus one year of professional forestry experience and one year of professional forestry experience in a supervisory capacity.

Note : Professional forestry experience may include internships in forestry work.

Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities : Requirements at this level include knowledge of dendrology; of mensuration; of forest management; of silviculture; of modern forestry methods and techniques; of soil conservation techniques and principles; of forest economics; of timber management, inventories, cutting and regeneration methods; of forest products, marketing and urban forestry; of tree physiology; of the methods, techniques, tools and equipment related to wildland fire management and suppression; of report writing and recordkeeping; of tree identification; of forestry programs, forest regeneration systems, and natural resources; of silvicultural requirements of forest species; of common plant pests and appropriate pest control measures; of long-range planning; of federally shared forest resource programs; of public relations and promotional techniques; of budget preparation and administration; and of modern office practices. Ability is required to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; to express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; to speak effectively before groups; to follow written and oral instructions; to establish realistic direction for the district or the program assigned in consultation with higher level foresters and administrators; and to promote interest and cooperation in improved forest management and wildland fire management practices.

Physical Demands and Work Environment : This position will be working in an office setting and outdoors. They will work closely with landowners, and other natural resources personnel. Field work sometimes occurs in extreme environmental conditions, such as : high / cold temperatures; high winds; smoke; and dust. Subject to call after regular duty hours to serve as needed in Fire Season. Travel could be up to 50% during extreme Fire Seasons. This position may also require frequent travel throughout multiple counties in the state.

Must be willing to work hours other than on regular shifts during emergency situations

Must possess a valid driver’s license at time of employment and maintain throughout employment.

This position is subject to a twelve-month probationary period.
