Job description

Exempt / Non-Exempt :   Non-Exempt / Part-time

Reporting to :   Manager of Education and School Initiatives

HistoryMiami Museum Educators are valued staff representing their individual communities and the wider South Florida region. They may be emerging museum professionals, hoping to learn more about how museums can serve a community, or former teachers and other professionals who wish to share their lived experience with new audiences. Museum Educators create a highly positive experience for museum visitors who are diverse in their race, ethnicity, gender, sexual identity, abilities, and class while in our galleries, at the front desk and during programs and events. Museum Educators create a welcoming atmosphere for the visitor that encourages repeat visitation, support for the Museums mission through membership, and a positive view of the Museum that will be shared with family, friends, and neighbors.

Duties & Responsibilities :

  • Engage guests within museum galleries in active observation and discussion to enhance overall museum experience.
  • Creating a welcoming space for all visitors by answering questions, sharing stories about the cultural heritage of Miami, and maintaining the appearance and cleanliness of displays and exhibits.
  • Leading socially conscience and culturally relevant tours in an engaging manner by centering students’ needs and utilizing inquiry and object-based learning for groups of 30 people or more.
  • Accommodating the needs of diverse visitors.
  • Assisting with the physical set-up, delivery and breakdown of museum programs, member events and rentals.
  • Stay up to date on museum policies and procedures to inform and assist guests when needed.
  • Accurately and efficiently handling cash and credit card transactions using a point-of-sale system.
  • Collecting and accurately recording visitor and membership data.
  • Answering the telephone in a friendly manner, efficiently routing calls, and answering general inquiries.
  • Representing the museum and our community as a museum ambassador at local outreach events.
  • Participating in professional development opportunities hosted by HistoryMiami Museum and partner organizations.
  • Being motivated to learn and to assist others in their own learning.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor.
  • Adhering to dress code.
  • Assisting with other duties and special projects as assigned by Manager.

Qualifications :

  • Relevant experience in previous jobs, coursework, internships and volunteer work or a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a relevant subject area.
  • A cool, calm, pleasant demeanor that encourages conversation and engagement from the Museum visitor.
  • Access to email and a valid driver’s license.
  • A flexible schedule that includes one full weekend day and being available at least 24 hours a week. Evenings are a major plus.
  • Confidence working outdoors in the elements, with heights and enclosed spaces and the ability to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Working Conditions and Physical Requirements :

  • The physical demands and work environment described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position.
  • Confidence working outdoors in the elements, with heights and enclosed spaces.
  • Extended periods of standing and walking required for gallery duties.
  • Driving to offsite programs and outreach events.
  • Occasional stooping, kneeling, bending, squatting / crouching, pushing / pulling, and reaching above the shoulders and lifting of up to 50 lbs.
  • Lifting and transporting of moderately heavy objects, such as boxes, tables, chairs, etc. will be required.
  • Being able to work programs / events with mid-to-high noise levels such as performances, exhibition openings, festivals, etc.
  • Hourly wages breakdown :

  • There is a 3-month paid probationary period.
  • The base rate for all duties (including at off-site locations and during special events) is $15 / hour.
  • This description may change at any time. Every effort will be made to notify Museum Educators of any changes.

To apply, please submit your resume and cover letter and answer a few questions using our employment application. If you are unable to complete the online application, please bring your resume and cover letter to the Museum during our regular public hours. Your information will be forwarded to the appropriate staff. Background checks required.
