About the Role
We are seeking a seasoned professional to fill the role of Director of User-Centred Design (UCD) within a transformative program. The successful candidate will spearhead the strategy, capability, and execution of user-centred design initiatives, ensuring that digital and data-enabled services meet the diverse needs of users in secure and mission-critical contexts. This leadership role includes establishing a clear vision, strategic direction, and best practices for UCD, along with building and managing a dynamic multidisciplinary design team focused on user research, service design, interaction design, and content design.
The Director of UCD will champion user advocacy, shape design governance, and foster a collaborative culture across design, engineering, product management, and service delivery teams. Candidates should possess substantial experience in leading UCD efforts within large-scale, complex, or secure environments, demonstrating a robust history of building and managing diverse design teams. A deep understanding of GDS service standards and the digital delivery lifecycle, particularly in government or defence sectors, is crucial.
This role necessitates a seamless integration of UCD with Agile and DevOps delivery frameworks, along with exceptional stakeholder engagement and the ability to influence senior decision-makers. Security Clearance (SC) is required, and candidates with a background in defence or government digital services, as well as formal qualifications in UX, service design, or human factors, will be highly valued.
The ideal applicant will excel at mentoring and developing teams in human-centred design principles, accessibility, and inclusive design.
