Director, Orthopedic Service Line

At NorthBay Health, the Director, Orthopedic Service Line provides strategic, operational, and financial leadership for the orthopedic service line across the continuum of care including Rehabilitation Services.

This role is accountable for driving growth, quality, patient experience, and financial performance through close partnership with physician leaders, nursing leadership, and system stakeholders. The Director leads multidisciplinary teams, ensures regulatory and accreditation compliance, advances evidence-based care models, and positions Orthopedics as a destination service aligned with organizational strategy and community needs.

This individual works collaboratively with VPs of Service Lines, Medical Directors and Surgical Services leadership, staff and management team in planning and delivery an optimal level of care for the Musculoskeletal patient. S/he operates from an expert knowledge base of service line development. S/he supervises, coaches and mentors personnel. S/he ensures cost effective patient outcomes through the supervision of clinical/professional staff, collaboration with medical staff, nursing and support staff.

This Director ensures compliance with state/federal and other regulatory and accreditation body guidelines and requirements. This individual must be fiscally savvy, willing to assume new responsibilities as requested, accept accountability and operate effectively under pressure. Confidence, integrity, skilled communication and positivity are also essential.

PRIMARY JOB DUTIES

Clinical Integration & Quality

  • Works in dyad partnership with physician leadership to ensure high-quality, safe, evidence-based orthopedic care.
  • Oversees multidisciplinary care coordination and tumor board effectiveness.
  • Ensures compliance with regulatory, accreditation, and certification requirements (e.g. TJC, Joint Replacement etc).
  • Monitors clinical quality outcomes and drives continuous performance improvement.
  • Supports organizational mission statement, values and goals and role models to staff and others.
  • Develops departmental goals and objectives with input from staff that aligns with, and supports the organizational and divisional goals and objectives
  • Delegates authority and accountability to clinical/professional staff for clinical practice and patient care decisions that are consistent with professional standards, regulatory agencies and organizational policies and procedures
  • Maintains a state of readiness for all accreditation activities.
  • Maintains a safe and caring environment for patients, staff and visitors.
  • Assures that care provided to patients is consistent with plans of care.
  • Supports and facilitates research based clinical practice.
  • Develops and implements department specific standards and policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of care and services.
  • Continuously assesses and improves assigned departments' performance.

Operations & Access

  • Provides oversight of Orthopedic and Rehabilitation operations across inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Optimizes patient flow, access, scheduling, and throughput.
  • Collaborates with nursing, rehab therapy, and ancillary services to ensure seamless care delivery.
  • Leads operational standardization and best-practice implementation
  • Utilizes available information systems.

Financial Management

  • Accountable for Orthopedic service line financial performance, including budgeting, forecasting, and expense management.
  • Partners with finance and revenue cycle teams to optimize reimbursement, reduce denials, and improve net revenue.
  • Evaluates return on investment for new programs, technology, and capital expenditures.
  • Supports managed care strategies and payor negotiations related to orthopedic/rehabilitation services across sites.
  • Assures appropriate utilization of all available resources to provide quality, cost-effective patient care.
  • Demonstrates accountability for departmental staffing plan including appropriate number and skill mix, activities of recruitment and retention, interviewing, hiring, firing, evaluating, counseling and educating with a primary emphasis on staff competency.
  • Prepares monitors and manages annual personnel, operating and capital budgets.
  • Communicates budgetary information both to the VP, staff and to the Division.

Strategic Leadership

  • Develops and executes a multi-year orthopedic service line strategic plan aligned with organizational goals.
  • Identifies market opportunities, growth initiatives, and service gaps to expand access and reduce leakage.
  • Leads new program development, service expansions, and business case development.
  • Partners with executive leadership on capital planning and long-range orthopedic investments.
  • Develops operating plan for department that supports the organizational strategic plan.
  • Effectively manages all projects from conception through successful implementation.
  • Recommends space and other resources as needed by assigned departments.
  • Participates in selecting outside sources for needed services.

Governance & Reporting

  • Establishes and supports orthopedic governance structures and decision-making processes.
  • Prepares and presents performance reports to senior leadership and governing bodies.
  • Uses data and analytics to drive transparency, accountability, and informed decision-making.

Physician & Provider Engagement

  • Builds strong, collaborative relationships with surgeons, APPs and surgical services leadership.
  • Supports recruitment, onboarding, retention, and engagement of Orthopedic providers.
  • Aligns provider incentives with quality, productivity, access, and patient experience goals.
  • Addresses provider concerns and fosters a culture of accountability and trust.

Team Leadership & Culture

  • Provides direct and indirect leadership to multidisciplinary orthopedic teams.
  • Establishes clear goals, expectations, and performance metrics.
  • Promotes professional development, succession planning, and employee engagement.
  • Leads change management initiatives and ensures effective communication across stakeholders.
  • Demonstrates effective problem solving and conflict resolution skills.

Patient Experience & Community Engagement

  • Champions a patient-centered approach to Orthopedic care and wellness.
  • Oversees patient experience performance and improvement initiatives.
  • Partners with marketing, communications, and philanthropy to enhance community presence and brand

Human Resources

  • Facilitates professional growth and development of staff through identification of needs, provision of educational programs and evaluations of efforts.
  • Coordinates programs with the use of internal and external resources that will facilitate and promote professional growth opportunities for the staff.
  • Assures that staff achieves and maintains identified competencies related to their practice through such activities as orientation programs, evaluation process, certification programs, in-services, training, etc.
  • Meets all organizational requirements regarding hiring, orientation, First Day Safety, competency documentation, annual performance evaluations, coaching, counseling, and disciplinary action.
  • Meets all mandated training/education requirements.
  • Meets all accreditation and regulatory requirements re: human resource management.

Qualifications

Education :

  • Bachelor's degree in Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, Nursing, or a related field.
  • Master's degree highly preferred.

Experience :

  • Minimum 710 years of progressive healthcare leadership experience.
  • At least 5 years in orthopedic services, service line leadership, or a closely related clinical specialty.
  • Demonstrated experience leading multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience with budgeting, financial management, and business planning.
  • Experience working closely with physicians and APPs in a dyad or service line model.
  • Experience with regulatory and accreditation standards related to orthopedics.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience in an integrated health system or multi-site orthopedic program.
  • Prior responsibility for service line P&L.
  • Experience leading program growth, expansion, or turnaround initiatives.
