Climate Social Video Producer (Producer)
The Associated Press is an independent global news organization dedicated to factual reporting. Founded in 1846, AP today remains the most trusted source of fast, accurate, unbiased news in all formats and the essential provider of the technology and services vital to the news business. More than half the world's population sees AP journalism every day.
The Associated Press seeks a journalist who is creative, passionate about experimentation and eager to join a new beat team focused on climate solutions. This team will work to advance explanatory reporting, examining how everyday decisions by individuals, groups and corporations impact our climate and environment. This position is covered by AP’s agreement with the News Media Guild. The temporary position lasts for one year, with the possibility of extension.
Responsibilities : Reporting to the video editor for global beats, you will be based in New York, Washington, D.C. or Los Angeles and cover climate change and related issues in an explanatory way. You will use data to make decisions about audience interest and trends. We’re looking for a digital native reporter who is also comfortable telling stories in traditional text – as well as being behind or in front of a video camera – and adept at using social media for newsgathering and audience development. The successful candidate does not need to be an expert in climate topics but should have interest and some knowledge. You should have experience in reporting on complex subject matters and boiling them down into digestible, easy to understand content for general audience.
The successful candidate will :
- Have a great news sense, with the ability to communicate and drive stories that customers will use and that consumers will want to share, like and talk about on digital platforms.
- Have experience in vertical and traditional video production, including video editing and audio tracking. Experience with other popular digital platforms, such as podcasting or newsletter production, is preferred.
- Have a strong understanding of audience needs, as well as an understanding of how to effectively plan and analyze metrics and make them actionable.
- Have strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams of journalists at AP who operate in all formats : text, photo, video, audio, digital / social, interactive and graphics.
- Pursue innovative techniques while maintaining AP’s standards for integrity and objectivity.
- Be able and willing to work at night and on weekends, as coverage demands, as AP is a 24 / 7 operation.
Required Qualifications :
Preferred Qualifications : You must have the ability to report and package engaging stories about climate solutions that will resonate with an audience that is interested in – but not an expert in – climate topics. You must be able to work swiftly and accurately under tight deadlines, and plan and complete short- and long-term projects. The successful candidate should have at least one year of full-time experience as a reporter, video journalist or social media producer at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, online or digital news outlet, or an AP bureau or regional desk.
We will consider strong candidates who do not meet every listed qualification. You may use a cover letter to describe the unique qualifications you would bring to this role.
This position is covered by The Associated Press’ contract with the News Media Guild, which provides for an annual salary for Class A staff of between $52,046 and $82,934 based on location and years of professional experience. AP may offer additional compensation based on a job candidate’s skills, qualifications and market location. Employees are eligible to participate, according to the terms of the official plan documents, in a 401(k) plan and employer-sponsored health insurance plan, and are eligible for paid time off and holidays in accordance with AP policy.
The Associated Press offers comprehensive benefits which include :
Benefits may vary based on the job, full-time or part-time schedule, location, and collectively bargained status.
Application Deadline is February 28, 2025 at 11 : 59PM EST.
