The successful inpatient / lab genetic counselor is a dynamic, innovative, and multifaceted position with the crucial role of liaison between the lab and various specialties of pediatric care. He / she will be available for various inpatient roles including guidance for choosing the appropriate genetic test, consenting for genetic tests and counseling of genetic results for inpatients. He / she will be responsible for providing consulting services and communicating results to physicians and health professionals. He / she will also work in the genetics clinic as a genetic counselor a portion of the time. He / she will screen and review all orders for genetic tests whether performed in-house or sent to a reference laboratory and educate providers on this ever changing landscape. He / she must be able to assess the patient's clinical history and recommend alternative genetic testing when necessary based on analysis of risk, benefit, and cost. If necessary, the genetic counselor will provide information regarding unexpected genetic conditions. The ideal candidate must be proficient at maintaining internal records as well as records from outside testing facilities and ensuring that results are conveyed and understood. In addition, he / she will participate in collaborative efforts to improve utilization, quality, and reimbursement for the laboratory. Experience is desirable but not required.

Description
1. Conducts Genetic Counselor duties by focusing on services needed in the Molecular Laboratory. Screens and reviews orders for genetic tests. Provides genetic consultation services as requested by health care provders for inpatients.
2. Educates clinicans in the appropriate way to order genetic tests within insurance coverage and barriers, test options, and the correct process for placing orders.
3. Maintains lists of referral test sites and maintains a line of communication with referral test sites. Works with lab management and clinicians to consolidate genetic reference lab testing in order to minimize the number of reference labs used and to negotiate the lowest cost per test. Meets with referernce laboratories when appropriate to negotiate lowest cost per test and maintain contracts.
4. Functions as a liason between the laboratory and clinicians to help ensure appropriate patient referral.
5. Provides written documention for test result reports including help with test summaries, recommendations, and identifying support groups.
6. Collects personal and family medical history from patients. Reviews medical records to prepare for clinic visits and gathers medical records for new patients. Facilitates informed decision making with patients and family. Performs risk assessments to determine likelihood of genetic contribution to disease. Provides consultation and genetic counseling to patients who are admitted to the hospital upon positive genetic test results. Provides a written genetic counseling letter and education about the genetic condition, risks, recommended screening and prevention options, inheritance patterns, and resources. Coordinates follow-up care including referrals, insurance prior authorization for genetic testing and calling families with test results.
7. Provides educational presentations to healthcare professionals and community groups regarding the role of genetics in health and disease. Works closely with physicians in a wide variety of clinical specialties including surgery, neurology, internal medicine, endocrinology and cardiology to help integrate genetics into patient care.
8. Stays current on information regarding specific genetic syndromes, available testing, and research opportunities.
9. Attends and participates in various department conferences and meetings, provides consultative perspectives on potential relevant genetic conditions to the cases. Assists in writing publications, conference presentations, and recruiting patients for reserch when needed.
10. Prepares and delivers lectures to the genetic counseling students, when necessary.
11. Supervises genetic counseling students in the clinic by providing appropriate prep, feedback, and end of rotation evaluations, when necessary.
12. Performs other duties as assigned.
