Thank you for your interest in volunteering with the SEL Program at Maple Counseling, classically known as Community Circle! For over 50 years, this vital program has played an important role in helping children in our partnering elementary and middle schools develop essential life skills such as self-awareness, relationship management, responsible decision-making, and more. The program volunteers, called Leaders, are people who care genuinely about the well-being and self-esteem of children. They are of varying ages, backgrounds, and professions. Included are people from a wide range of professions (doctors, teachers, nurses), parents, retirees, and recent college graduates. About the Role : As an SEL Leader, you will work directly with students in elementary and middle school classrooms. You will conduct engaging and interactive lessons designed to help students build social and emotional skills. These lessons include a variety of activities such as games, discussions, and role-playing exercises. Your role is primarily to facilitate these experiences with the students. Your creativity is welcome as you adapt the lessons to your own style. Leaders use puppets, picture books, videos, and other props to bring the lessons to life. Training and Support : We have a mandatory, weekly supervision meeting on Tuesdays from 12 : 15 pm to 1 : 30 pm where we provide training throughout the year and share ideas of successful practices both in person and online. The meeting is held in person at Maple Counseling. The meeting can also be attended via Zoom. Our training includes introduction to SEL best practices, curriculum overview, library of lessons and resources, and classroom management. You will receive ongoing support through meetings, mentoring, and access to resources. Commitment : We require a minimum 1-year commitment for volunteers. The average classroom size is 22 students. Our leaders work with as few as one classroom to as many as 8. This range depends on the Leader’s availability, as well as the demand for Leaders from the schools. Assignment to classrooms depends on teachers’ requests for our program. Generally, schools are in session from 8 : 30 am to 3 : 00 pm. Additional Requirements : A background check is required for all volunteers who will be working directly with children. Schools require a TB test and Live Scan (fingerprints). If working in a LAUSD school, you are required to apply as an LAUSD Volunteer by filling out an online application and submitting proof of the TB test results and Live Scan. Next Steps : Please answer the following questions as best as you can. You will have the opportunity to elaborate more in the interview. Once you have submitted this application, a member of our team will be in touch to set up an interview. Thank you so much for your enthusiasm and interest in making a difference in the lives of children! Powered by JazzHR
