DEPARTMENT : Research & Analysis

REPORTS TO : Director, Research & Digital Programming

LOCATION : Colorado Springs, Colorado

COMPENSATION :

POSITION SUMMARY / OBJECTIVE :

The Managing Editor for Research & Analysis will coordinate closely with the department director to plan content, coordinate assignments with in-house analysts and contributing writers, manage content budgets based on team inputs, provide essential first edits to copy produced for The Space Report, and based on that content, will produce additional content for press releases, social media posts and executive summaries. The ideal candidate also will have experience in database management and producing analysis based on that data and should be comfortable with SQL, R and Tableau.

The managing editor for Research & Analysis will ensure high quality reports, papers, and studies on relevant and emerging topics across all sectors of the space industry, which includes online and printed content that adheres to AP style. He or she also may coordinate closely with the department director to help manage studies and specialized market analysis, coordinate campaigns with Marketing staff, and will help ensure cross-team collaboration and production of research to support Space Foundation program priorities.

The content R&A produces supports Space Foundation's research efforts, including the development of reports for Space Foundation leadership and government partners, op-eds, briefings, and speeches concerning the space industry. As such, the ideal candidate must demonstrate C-suite written and oral communication skills and must understand and use appropriate protocol with executives and military leaders.

RESPONSIBILITIES :

The following briefly describes representative responsibilities of this job, but it is not intended to be a complete or all-inclusive listing of activities, duties, or responsibilities required of this position :

  • Coordinate with the department director to understand, anticipate and plan for content needs and deadlines.
  • Work with other members of the Research & Analysis team to plan, manage and edit content for The Space Report, using experience as an editor to ensure copy adheres to AP style and maintains a stellar level of accuracy.
  • Coordinates / partners with the department director to plan and manage analysis and / or studies examining issues such as space workforce development and key market shifts in the industry.
  • Coordinates, schedules and provides first edits to articles provided by contributing writers.
  • Maintains department content budgets, production schedules and yearly schedules to drive content decisions.
  • Edit related graphics, coordinate media assets and help manage production needs for publications.
  • Will assist with developing new datasets and producing analysis from that data.
  • Will be a leading contributor in leveraging AI to enhance data analysis and related content.
  • Assist as directed with other Space Foundation events, including the annual Space Symposium.
  • Perform other duties and projects as assigned.

COMPETENCIES :

The following briefly describes knowledge, skills, abilities, and characteristics associated with this position, including any required experience, education, licensure, certification, or combination thereof :

  • BA / BS degree in journalism, communications, data science or related field preferred.
  • Minimum 6 years' experience as a manager and content / line editor in a team environment with a background in building and maintaining content budgets.
  • Expertise in line editing and adherence to AP style.
  • Demonstrated experience in database management and producing analysis based on that data.
  • Demonstrated experience in corporate communications and market surveys.
  • Knowledge of and passion for the space industry is preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively as a team member; ability to interact appropriately with management, professional and clerical staff and individuals outside the organization.

    Individuals in this position will generally work indoors and will have a workspace designated solely for them. Necessary office furnishings, equipment, and supplies will be provided by the Foundation. While performing this job's duties, the employee may periodically be required to work outdoors and would be exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The employee may periodically be required to work in an offsite environment or at special events and may be asked to travel on Foundation business at the Foundation's expense. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

    JOB STATUS :

  • FLSA Classification : This position is exempt per guidelines of the Fair Labor Standards Act and, as such, an individual in this position is not eligible to receive overtime pay.
  • Full- or Part-Time : This position is full-time in nature. An individual in this position will regularly work a schedule of 40 / 40+ hours per week.
  • Work Location : This position's primary work site is the headquarters location in Colorado Springs, CO. The nature and responsibilities of this position are such that it is eligible for alternative worksite arrangements, such as working from home or telecommuting, on a consistent or recurring basis. Space Foundation's current hybrid policy allows for 2 remote work days per week.
  • Regular Schedule : Usual business days are Monday through Friday, holidays excepted, and usual business hours are from 8 A.M. to 5 P.M. in the time zone in which the position is located.
