The Domestic Violence Advocate

Job Summary

The Domestic Violence Advocate will work directly with men and women at the FCC Domestic Violence Shelter.

The DV Advocate is the first responder to crisis situations within shelter, as well as providing crisis intervention for hotline callers.

The DV Advocate will serve as a support for clients through referrals, housing advocacy, safety planning, crisis intervention, and healthy coping skills.

The DV Advocate will work on a treatment team with other FCC staff to discuss care coordination and needed services.

Through goal planning and activities, the DV Advocate will ensure the ongoing safety of clients in shelter.

Coordinates and works closely with housing developments, KCDC / Section 8, DHS, CAC, mental health providers, DV shelters across the state, and other service providers.

Interfaces with community agencies and referral sources to coordinate care.

Maintains file records and client information in a confidential manner.

Upholds Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) confidentiality guidelines.

Maintains cleanliness and upkeep of shelter.

Participates in supervision with the Shelter Team Leader.

Completes all documentation in a timely manner and upholds center policy and procedures.

Embraces key values of advocacy : empowerment, normalization, rehabilitation, and continuity of care.

Must be available weekend and evening hours.

Quality Care.

Provides coordination of care for adults and / or families within FCC shelter.

Facilitates weekly trauma-informed support group.

Works closely with therapeutic service providers to ensure quality care for clients.

Completes semi-annual continuing education on trauma-informed care and the effects of trauma.

Participates in state-wide trainings for DV trauma, as applicable.

Answers 24 / 7 hotline and provides quality care to callers in crisis.

Attends and is timely to weekly treatment team meetings.

Provides crisis intervention and emergency services as needed.

Promotes health education with the adults and / or families.

Responds to all emails and voicemails within two business days.

Responds to all client requests within one business day.

Provides weekly face-to-face contact with clients on caseload in FCC shelter.

Develops a treatment plan with all clients on caseload.

Maintain cleanliness and upkeep of shelter.

Represents HRMC and FCC in a professional manner when interacting with community partners.

2. Documentation and Confidentiality Requirements.

Completes all required documentation within 48 hours of service delivery.

Inputs all client's intakes and discharges into Osnium database within one business day.

Ensures all file paperwork is signed and up to date.

Documents services and face-to-face contacts and submit to Shelter Team Leader weekly.

Maintains confidentiality of the shelter, including location and client information.

Contacts program supervisors for guidance on confidentiality requirements with other service providers.

3. Team Atmosphere.

Interacts professionally with other employees, clients, and community organizations.

Works effectively as a team contributor on all assignments.

Works independently while understanding the necessity for communicating and coordinating work efforts with other employees and organizations.

Is expected to have regular and predictable attendance and the ability to work cooperatively with others.

COMPENSATION :

Starting salary for this position is approximately $17.24 / hr based on relevant experience and education.

QUALIFICATIONS - Adolescent Prevention Specialist

Education / Knowledge :

Must possess a Bachelor's degree in social services, counseling, child and family studies, or related field with course work or experience in the areas of child development, cultural diversity, human development, etiology and treatment of mental illness, alcohol and drug abuse, physical and sexual abuse, suicide, and crisis intervention.

Knowledge of the dynamics and cycles of domestic violence and treatment interventions for trauma highly preferred.

Degree in Social Work or Mental Health Counseling preferred.

Experience :

1-2 years working with adults and / or families preferred.

Experience / knowledge / front line service delivery in domestic violence or other victim services is preferred.

Experience in case management and trauma-informed care is preferred.

Experience in crisis intervention, de-escalation, and counseling is highly preferred.

Survivors of violence and those exposed to domestic violence are encouraged to apply.

Bilingual preferred.

Physical / Emotional / Social - Skills / Abilities :

Ability to effectively and ethically coordinate care for male and female victims of domestic violence.

Ability to present professionally and work within a team to plan, implement, and evaluate trauma-informed care.

Must have mental ability to exercise sound judgement under pressure.

Ability to exercise sound judgment and effective decision-making, ability to set and demonstrate appropriate boundaries, ability to be an empathic listener, flexibility, willingness, and adaptability to working with diverse populations.

Must also have the ability to communicate effectively and possess good time management and organizational skills.

Exposure to biological hazards.

Hearing of normal and soft tones.

Close eye work.

Basic computer literacy skills.

Lifting up to 50 lbs.

Pushing / pulling up to 150 lbs.

Frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, and reaching.

May be exposed to certified service animals.

Exposure to chemical products for maintaining shelter cleanliness.

This position requires utilizing a personal dependable vehicle to conduct Center business.

Maintaining a dependable vehicle and certified driver status is a condition of employment.

This position also requires that the employee has an F Endorsement on his / her Driver License to be available to transport individuals as needed.

Certified in CPR / First Aid and Handle With Care. (training provided)
