IMPORTANT NOTICE: Available duty assignments at the time of offer may include high-priority areas, and relocation may be required. U.S. Border Patrol determines duty assignments based on operational needs, which may not align with candidates' preferences.

Salary and Benefits:

Base Salary for newly appointed law enforcement Border Patrol Officers ranges from:
Base Salary: GL-9/GS-11, $63,148 - $120,145 per year.

Locality Pay: Varies by duty location.
Overtime Pay: Up to 25%.

A fully trained BPO may receive up to an additional 25% of base pay, in accordance with the BPA Pay Reform Act of 2014. This is a career ladder position with grade level advancement opportunities. Promotion to the next higher grade level is possible after successfully completing one year in the current position.

All Border Patrol Officers can select from a range of federal employment benefits including health insurance plans, generous leave policies, and participation in the Thrift Savings Plan, which mirrors traditional and ROTH 401(k) options.

Recruitment Incentive:
Newly appointed Border Patrol Officers will be offered up to a $20,000 incentive. The first $10,000 is awarded upon completion of the Border Patrol Academy, with another $10,000 for accepting a priority location. Priority locations include: Sierra Blanca, TX; Presidio, TX; Sanderson, TX; Comstock, TX; Lordsburg, NM; Freer, TX; Hebbronville, TX; Ajo, AZ.

Retention Incentive:
Newly appointed Border Patrol Officers may also qualify for up to $40,000 in additional incentives over the course of their first four years.

Duties and Responsibilities:

As a BPO, you will be part of a dedicated workforce committed to protecting American citizens by securing borders, deterring illegal activities, and supporting national economic stability. You will perform various tasks such as:

• Detecting and questioning individuals suspected of violating immigration and customs laws and inspecting documentation.
• Preventing and apprehending aliens and smugglers at or near borders through surveillance and covert operations.
• Analyzing tracks, marks, and evidence of illegal entries.
• Conducting various patrol checks including traffic and city patrols, alongside transportation checks.
• Utilizing government assets, such as vehicles and vessels, for patrolling the border and coastal waters.

Qualifications:

GL-9: You qualify for the GL-9 level with one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which includes:

• Conducting physical searches for weapons, contraband, and evidence on detained individuals and vehicles.
• Collaborating with law enforcement to identify and apprehend law violators.
• Demonstrating proficiency with firearms and preparing investigative reports.

If you have law enforcement or military law enforcement experience, you may qualify at GS-11.

GS-11: You qualify for the GS-11 level with one year of experience equivalent to the lower grade, involving law enforcement duties such as:

• Tracking illegal operations and criminal activities using intelligence information as a law enforcement official.
• Leading investigations into illegal operations to understand sources and patterns.
• Apprehending violators using advanced surveillance and detection technology.

Experience requirements are critical; no education substitutions exist for the GL-9 or GS-11 grade levels.

Other Requirements:

Citizenship: U.S. Citizenship is required to apply.
Residency: Candidates must have resided in the U.S. for at least three of the last five years.
Age Restriction: Candidates must be referred for selection before their 40th birthday. This restriction does not apply to current or former federal law enforcement personnel.

Veterans' Preference: Veterans may be eligible for an excepted service Veterans' Recruitment Appointment (VRA).

Formal Training: Once hired, you will attend the U.S. Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, NM, for about six months to receive extensive training in immigration laws, law enforcement, and Border Patrol operations, including proficiency in Spanish.
