Position Summary

San Diego State University is seeking a dedicated After-hours Transportation Assistant to ensure safe and efficient mobility for students with impairments. Reporting to the Special Programs and Services Coordinator, this essential role involves managing and supporting SDS's cart transportation services after regular business hours.

Key Responsibilities

  • Transportation Coordination : Drive carts to carry out the existing transportation schedule and coordinate SDS's cart transportation services to accommodate students with mobility impairments.
  • Clerical Support : Provide office and clerical support for the coordination of after-hours transportation services, including answering requests for new and changed services, and updating schedules.
  • Lead Cart Drivers : Leading student assistant cart drivers, ensuring smooth operations during after-hours.
  • Independent Decision-Making : Make independent decisions using good judgment, especially since the role involves being the sole staff member present for the majority of the work time.
  • Emergency Response : Provide lead direction in emergency situations, such as notifying public safety for an agitated student or addressing power outages that interrupt testing processes.

    Position Information

  • This is a part-time (.65 time-base), benefits eligible, temporary position anticipated to end June 30, 2026, with the possibility of reappointment.
  • This appointment is for a 10 / 12 pay-plan position. The incumbent works 10 months per year and is paid over 12 months, with June 2025 and January 2026 as the anticipated off months.
  • This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation.
  • This role is scheduled for 26 hours a week, Monday - Thursday, 3 : 00 p.m. to 10 : 00 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs. (Ability to work evenings on a regular basis and occasional weekend hours)
  • The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.
  • Department Summary

    Student Disability Services (SDS) in the Division of Student Affairs and Campus Diversity provides a full range of accommodations and services to nearly 2,500 students with physical, psychological, and learning disabilities, facilitating equal access to the educational process. This is accomplished through direct service support, review of campus accessibility, adaptive technology, assessment, test accommodation, and a variety of other services. Accommodations vary according to types of disabilities and may include sign language interpreting; provision of alternative formats, such as electronic text or Braille; computer-assisted real-time captioning; test accommodations; advising; assistive computer technology; cart transportation services, and numerous other services. Provision of these academic support services, technology and advocacy promotes the retention and graduation of students with disabilities at SDSU.

    Two additional programs are affiliated with the Student Disability Services. The first is funded by a federal TRiO-Student Support Services grant that provides enhanced services intended to increase graduation and retention rates of at-risk undergraduates. The TRiO-SSS program employs three professional staff. The second is a Workability IV program that is a cooperative contract between the state Department of Rehabilitation (DOR), SDSU Career Services and Student Disability Services the purpose of which is to deliver enhanced career services to students with disabilities who are DOR consumers. The Workability IV program employs one full-time professional staff and one part-time support staff.

    Education and Experience

    Entry to this classification requires fundamental written and oral communication skills, including a sound foundation in English grammar, spelling, and punctuation; an ability to understand standard office procedures; an ability to operate standard office equipment; an ability to learn office technology systems; an ability to perform basic arithmetic calculations; and typing and keyboard skills.

    These entry qualifications would normally be obtained through completion of a high school program or its equivalent and some experience in an office environment.

    Key Qualifications

  • Experience working with people with disabilities; experience working in a university setting.
  • General working knowledge of applicable university infrastructure, policies, and procedures.
  • Fluency in using standard office software packages.
  • Ability to learn, interpret independently, and apply a variety of complex policies and procedures. Able to identify deviations from applicable policies.
  • Work often involves front line contacts with a variety of campus and community individuals requiring active problem solving and effective interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated competence in understanding, interpreting, and communicating procedures, policies, information, ideas and instructions.
  • Licenses / Certifications Required

  • Valid California Driver's License or the ability to obtain one within 10 days of hire.
  • Compensation and Benefits

    Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $1,993.55 per month.

    Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.
