There are no strict educational requirements for becoming a bodyguard, although most employers usually require a high school diploma or GED.

However, to increases your chances of landing a job, it is recommended that you take a Bodyguard training program. Another option is to get an Associates' degree in a security-related field such as police science or personal security.

Another requirement of being a bodyguard is being in excellent physical shape. While movies and television have portrayed bodyguards as tall and wide, any body type can become a Bodyguard so long as they have the strength, stamina, and agility.  Bodyguards often take courses in martial arts, which helps teach self-defense and hand-to-hand combat skills.

Some states require that Bodyguards have licenses. Check your state requirements for licensing. In addition, you may need to carry a weapon that requires additional licensing.  Bodyguards should have expert-level mastery of their weapons and only use them when necessary.

What can help you become a Bodyguard?
  • Military training
Many skills required of Bodyguards, such as mental alertness, tactical knowledge, and weapon mastery, are skills the military teaches.  It is, therefore, no surprise that many bodyguards have some military training. You can investigate National Guard or reserve programs to get this training without seeing combat.
  • First aid training
If your client is injured, you will need to perform first aid/CPR if a situation arises. There are many organizations, such as the Red Cross, that offer training in these skills.
  • Be in good physical shape.
As previously mentioned, you don't need to be a massive bodybuilder, but you do need good strength, endurance, and agility to perform all your duties as a Bodyguard. Consider working with a personal trainer to meet and maintain your fitness goals.
  • Excellent driving skills
Bodyguards may need to drive quickly, safely, and defensively, all while keeping a client safe. This comes with practice and is an important asset.
