The only requirement for becoming a Carpenter is a high school diploma. If you're interested in working as a Carpenter in high school, you can take classes such as geometry, algebra, and woodworking (aka 'shop').  Some high schools also offer vocational programs or community college classes, and those can help gain experience. 

The most common route to becoming a Carpenter is through an apprenticeship program. Employers sponsor these programs, so you can get paid while you learn the trade. Several groups offer these programs, such as unions and contractor associations. Check your local job listings for Carpenter apprentice jobs to get an idea of the job market in your area. 

As an apprentice, you will start with small tasks, such as measuring and cutting wood and then gradually work up to more complex tasks like cabinetry. 

Some community colleges also offer courses in carpentry. These courses can complement apprenticeship programs and teach skills such as tool safety, building codes, and blueprint reading. 

Important Things to Know Before Becoming a Carpenter
Carpenters are very in-demand professionals, and you will likely find employment quite quickly. That being said, there are some things to keep in mind before setting off on this career path. 

• It's a physically demanding job.

You need to be able to stand, climb, or bend for several hours. There is some heavy lifting involved, and you should have decent physical strength and stamina. Learning proper body mechanics will help you prevent injuries down the road. 

• You need solid math skills.

Some things can be cut within an inch of error, while other pieces may need to be cut by the millimeter. You will need solid numerical literacy and be able to rely on your algebra and geometry skills daily. 

• There is communication and teamwork involved.

Especially if you work for clients doing custom carpentry or furniture making, you need to listen to the vision, provide your input, and make your clients comfortable in your decisions.
