There are no formal requirements to becoming a Choreographer other than an extensive dance background. Many Choreographers start their journeys as Dancers, then become Dance Teachers before eventually moving into choreography, although this path is by no means the only one.

Some Dancers and Choreographers chose to pursue post-secondary education. Many colleges and universities offer dance programs through their fine arts departments. These programs usually require that you prepare an audition piece that showcases your dance experience in ballet, modern, jazz, or other styles, although those three are the most common.

During your degree, you will take dance training classes, as well as choreography courses. Dance programs also expose you to courses like biomechanics and injury prevention techniques. While a degree is by no means essential to becoming successful, it does provide rigorous advanced training and exposes you to a more extensive network of fellow dance enthusiasts.

What can help you become a Choreographer

Beyond dance skills and a love for the art form, here are some other tips that can help you become a successful Choreographer.
  • Demonstrate your creativity
If the opportunity arises for you to choreograph any type of dance piece, from a play to a flash mob, you should take it and run with it. Showcase your work on social media. Apps like TikTok are especially great at showcasing dance and choreography abilities.
  • Athleticism
While Choreographers don't need the kind of stamina and power that professional Dancers do, they need to have the physical ability to stand for long periods or even demonstrate some more complex movements.
  • Teach dance
Teaching dance lessons is a great way to develop your choreography skills and your verbal communication skills. If you're a skilled Dancer, teaching is a great segue career into choreography, as dance classes often put on shows at the end of their sessions. It also helps you dive into dance techniques and build confidence in your sense of rhythm and creativity.
